PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAY ME
700 AM EST FRI APR 1 2016

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND
ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION HAVE DECLARED THE WEEK OF MARCH 28TH
THROUGH APRIL 1ST TSUNAMI PREPAREDNESS WEEK IN MAINE AND NEW
HAMPSHIRE, AS WELL AS IN THE REMAINDER OF THE COASTAL UNITED
STATES.

...OBTAINING MORE INFORMATION ON TSUNAMIS...

BECAUSE OF THE 2004 TSUNAMI IN THE INDIAN OCEAN AND THE 2011
TSUNAMI IN JAPAN, THERE IS A WEALTH OF INFORMATION ON TSUNAMIS
AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE NUMEROUS
VIDEOS THAT NOT ONLY SHOW THE IMPACT OF LARGE TSUNAMI WAVES, BUT
ALSO THE IMPACT OF MUCH SMALLER WAVES. BELOW IS A SAMPLING OF
SOME GOOD SOURCES FOR INFORMATION ON TSUNAMIS AND TSUNAMI
PREPAREDNESS.

A GOOD GENERAL SOURCE OF INFORMATION ON TSUNAMIS, CAN BE FOUND
AT:

THE MAINE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY HAS A WEB SITE THAT PROVIDES
INFORMATION SPECIFICALLY ON THE TSUNAMI THREAT IN ATLANTIC OCEAN
AND, IN PARTICULAR, TSUNAMI THREAT IN THE GULF OF MAINE:

INFORMATION ON THE NATIONAL TSUNAMI AWARENESS WEEK AND THE
NATIONAL TSUNAMI HAZARDOUS MITIGATION PLAN, INCLUDING
INFORMATION ON STATE HAZARD PLANNING FOR TSUNAMIS, IS AVAILABLE
AT:

VIDEO LINKS...

WHILE THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOES NOT ENDORSE THE LINK
BELOW, THE LINK DOES PROVIDE VIDEO FROM THE MARCH 11, 2011
TSUNAMI AS THE WAVES REACHED CALIFORNIA. IN PARTICULAR, IT
DEMONSTRATES THE SPEED OF THE CURRENT AND THE DAMAGE PRODUCED BY
THE RAPIDLY MOVING WATER.

THE FOLLOWING LINKS SHOWS THE POWER OF JUST A SMALL TSUNAMI WAVE
AS IT MOVES THROUGH SANTA CRUZ HARBOR IN CALIFORNIA. THE VIDEO
ALSO SHOWS EXACTLY WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD NOT DO WHEN A TSUNAMI
WATCH, WARNING, OR ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT -- THAT IS, PUTTING
THEIR LIVES AT RISK BY HEADING DOWN TO THE HARBOR TO WATCH THE
TSUNAMI.

REMEMBER, IF THE WATERS ALONG THE COAST UNEXPECTEDLY START TO
RISE OR RECEDE, MOVE OFF THE BEACH AND/OR AWAY FROM THE
SHORELINE. TSUNAMIS CAN STRIKE WITH THE FORCE OF A RAGING
RIVER. RESPECT THE POWER OF WATER AND MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND.
