THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GRAY ME HAS CONFIRMED A
MICROBURST /STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE/ NEAR LANCASTER IN COOS
COUNTY NEW HAMPSHIRE ON 08 03 2015.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONDUCTED A STORM SURVEY TO
DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF WINDS THAT RESULTED IN TWO FATALITIES,
NUMEROUS INJURIES, AND DAMAGE IN THE VICINITY OF THE LANCASTER NEW
HAMPSHIRE FAIRGROUNDS AT APPROXIMATELY 543 PM EDT ON THE EVENING
OF AUGUST 3RD. AREAL AND GROUND SURVEYS CONFIRMED DAMAGE
CONSISTENT WITH A MICROBURST. NUMEROUS SOFTWOOD TREES WERE BOTH
BLOWN OVER AND SNAPPED WHILE NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE OCCURRED TO
BUILDINGS. THIS TYPE OF DAMAGE IS CONSISTENT WITH WINDS SPEEDS OF
55-60 MPH WITH LOCALIZED GUSTS APPROACHING 75 MPH. MOST OF THE
TREE DAMAGE OCCURRED ALONG AND ADJACENT TO THE CONNECTICUT RIVER.

DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, NEW
HAMPSHIRE STATE POLICE, AND LANCASTER EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT FOR
ASSISTING IN THIS SURVEY.

A MICROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECTED OUTFLOW
AREA OF LESS THAN 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING LESS
THAN 5 MINUTES. MICROBURSTS MAY INDUCE DANGEROUS
HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL WIND SHEARS...WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT
AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE AND CAUSE PROPERTY DAMAGE. STRAIGHT-LINE
WINDS ARE GENERALLY ANY WIND THAT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH
ROTATION...USED MAINLY TO DIFFERENTIATE THEM FROM TORNADIC WINDS.
