PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
248 PM CST Sun Dec 10 2017

...KHGX RADAR WILL BE DOWN BETWEEN DECEMBER 11TH AND DECEMBER 15TH...

The weather radar used by National Weather Service Houston/Galveston,
KHGX, will be down for approximately 5 days between Monday December
11th and Friday December 15th.

During the outage, radar coverage is available from adjacent radar sites
including KFWS in Fort Worth, KGRK in Central Texas, KEWX in New
Braunfels, KCRP in Corpus Christi, TIAH for Houston Bush
intercontinental Airport, THOU for Houston Hobby Airport, KLCH for Lake
Charles, KPOE for Fort Polk and KSHV for Shreveport.

Technicians will be installing an important technological upgrade. This
includes a new signal processor which improves processing speed and data
quality, provides added functionality, and supports IT security.

This is the first of four major upgrades, known as life extension
projects, planned in the next five years to replace and refurbish major
components of the 20 year old WSR-88Ds and to keep the radars
operational into the 2030s.

The 150 million dollar investment is being made by the three
organizations that use these radars: the National Weather Service, the
United States Air Force and the Federal Aviation Administration. The
other service life extension projects include refurbishing the
transmitter, pedestal, and equipment shelters.
