Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
146 PM PDT Tue Apr 9 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Dry and mostly sunny and clear into Thursday. Increasing
clouds with isolated showers and thunderstorms over NW Nevada
Thursday afternoon, expanding in areal coverage Friday. PoPs
increase further Saturday with the potential for scattered
showers and stronger winds in conjunction with a deep upper low
that looks to move into the western U.S.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday night.

High pressure continues to build into the western U.S. from the
west with northwesterly flow over the region tonight and
Wednesday. Dry and fair weather persists under mostly sunny and
clear skies and generally light winds. Temperatures also continue
to trend warmer through the short-term period. Overnight lows
reside in the low 20s to low 30s tonight. Daytime high
temperatures Wednesday will be in the upper 50s to upper 60s with
overnight lows in the upper 20s to upper 30s.

&&

.LONG TERM...Thursday through next Tuesday

Thursday, look for mostly dry weather as the upper level ridge is
still above the silver state. However, there will be a low
probability (around 10%) for rain in poritons of NW Nevada
associated with modest instability and borderline PWAT values. No
significant accumulations expected under any activity. Warm
temperatures continue with highs in the 60s to 70s and lows in the
40s. Breezy southwest winds for northwestern Nevada at 15-20 mph
with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Friday through Sunday, models show high confidence of another low
pressure system moving towards southwest U.S. and moving east,
bringing in cooler temperatures and additional moisture. Chances
for rain however, there is moderate confidence as the position of
the low is still mixed between the model runs. The position could
impact the chances of precipitation, but so far, chances have
remained 25-40% across northern and central Nevada Friday evening
through Sunday morning. By Sunday afternoon, chances are expected
to dissipate as drier weather moves in. Temperatures are expected
to have a gradual cooling as high reach into the 60s to 70s Friday
and Saturday, with Sunday highs dropping into the 50s to 60s.
Lows also expected to cool starting in the 40s, and dropping into
the 30s by Sunday. Winds expected to increase in the afternoons
each day with Friday winds from the south at 20-25 mph with gusts
as high as 30-35 mph, Saturday winds from the south at 15-20 mph
with gusts as high as 25 mph, and Sunday winds from the southwest
at 10-15 mph.

Monday and Tuesday, drier conditions settle back over the state as
the low pressure moves eastward, however still expect cooler
temperatures as the trough spreads out across the western half of
the U.S.. Temperatures still expected to be cooler as highs are
expected in the 50s to 60s Monday, with Tuesday having some areas
in the 40s. Lows expected to reach back down in the 20s to 30s
both nights. Westerly winds both afternoons at 10-15 mph expected.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions expected at all terminals over the next
24 hour period with light winds at 10 kts or lower.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...The Humboldt River near Battle Mountain currently
resides in action stage with a river flood advisory in place
until further notice. An increase in flows is also expected among
faster responding rivers and creeks across northern Nevada as
temperatures contiue to warm under mostly sunny skies into
Thursday. Valley overnight lows warmer than 32 degrees forecast
beginning Wednesday night also exacerbate snow melt and subsequent
run off. The Bruneau River, Owhyee River, and Martin Creek likely
to see rapid increases in flow, potetnially moving into flood
advisory or flood warning levels. The Humboldt River at Comus is
also currently foreacst to move into action stage on Saturday.
