FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR THE SOUTH PLAINS REGION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LUBBOCK TX
505 AM CDT WED MAR 25 2015

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 9 PM
CDT THIS EVENING FOR MUCH OF THE SOUTHERN AND EASTERN SOUTH
PLAINS AND ROLLING PLAINS OF WEST TEXAS DUE TO RELATIVE HUMIDITIES
BELOW 15 PERCENT...WIND SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 20 MPH AT THE 20 FOOT
LEVEL...AND A HIGH FIRE DANGER...

.DISCUSSION...
VERY WARM TEMPERATURES AND DRY CONDITIONS AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT
WILL CREATE CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS
THE ROLLING PLAINS AND EASTERN SOUTH PLAINS. A DEEPENING LOW
PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL INCREASE SOUTHWEST TO WESTERLY WINDS TO 20-25
MPH AT THE 20 FOOT LEVEL. VERY WARM TEMPERATURES AND DRY AIR WILL
COMBINE TO CREATE AFTERNOON RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES AROUND 10
PERCENT IN THE CRITICAL AREA. ELSEWHERE...ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER
CONDITIONS WILL EXIST WITH SLIGHTLY LOWER WIND SPEEDS. A STRONG
COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THIS EVENING BRINGING AN ABRUPT WIND
SHIFT TO THE NORTH AT 25 TO 30 MPH.

MUCH COOLER TEMPERATURES WILL FILTER INTO THE AREA ON THURSDAY
BEHIND THE COLD FRONT BUT MUCH DRIER AIR WILL ACCOMPANY THE
COOLER TEMPERATURES. AFTERNOON RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES WILL BE
BETWEEN 15 AND 25 PERCENT BUT WITH RELATIVELY LIGHT WINDS.
