...RECORD COLD FIRST WEEK OF JANUARY FOR PARTS OF THE AREA...

The brutal cold outbreak that had its icy grip on our region
during the last two weeks has finally ended. Several cold
temperature records were set as a result, including an
impressively cold first week of January.

The average temperature from January 1st through 7th at Baltimore-
Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport was a mere
15.2 degrees. This shattered the previous record for the coldest
first week of January in the Baltimore area by over 3 degrees. The
previous record was 18.4 degrees, set in 1918. Temperature records
for the Baltimore area go back over 146 years to January of 1872.

The cold was also impressive in the Washington DC area, though
not technically record-breaking. The average temperature during
the same time period was 19.0 degrees, ranking it fourth on the
list for record coldest first weeks of January. 1918 and 1879 each
had an average temperature of 16.8 degrees between January 1st
and 7th, and 1877 had an average temperature of 18.4 during the
first week of January. Temperature records for the DC area also go
back over 146 years to January of 1872.

Washington Dulles International Airport has an average temperature
of 15.3 degrees between January 1st and 7th, which was also a
record for that site. The previous record was 19.5 degrees set in
1968. Records at Dulles go back to 1960.
