Fire Weather Planning Forecast for West Texas/Southeast New Mexico
National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX
339 AM CDT Mon Apr 15 2024

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON CDT /11 AM MDT/ TO 10 PM
CDT /9 PM MDT/ TODAY FOR RELATIVE HUMIDITY OF 10% OR LESS, 20-FT
WINDS OF 20 MPH OR MORE, AND VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER FOR SOUTHEAST
NEW MEXICO AND MUCH OF WEST TEXAS...

.DISCUSSION...

Critical to extreme fire weather conditions today as 20ft winds
exceed 20-25kts across most western counties, and wind gusts could
reach higher than 50kts in the mountains. Humidity will fall as low
as 3 percent this afternoon while temperatures sit well above
normal. ERCs are around the 75th percentile and fuels are dry, and
with RFTIs of 7-8, have gone ahead with a Red Flag Warning for this
afternoon and evening. Winds will remain elevated tonight, so
overnight recovery will only be 20-25 percent across the west.
Additional fire products may be needed both Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday as 20ft winds remain elevated and humidity falls to
critical levels each afternoon. Rain and better moisture returns
Friday and beyond with the arrival of a cold front.
