THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PITTSBURGH PA HAS CONFIRMED A
TORNADO NEAR HOAGLAND IN MERCER COUNTY WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA ON
JULY 8 2014.

PRELIMINARY INFORMATION FROM THE STORM SURVEY DONE BY THE NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE IN PITTSBURGH INDICATES A TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN
NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF STATE ROUTE 318 AND ORCHARD ROAD WITH
DAMAGE THAT CONTINUED TO THE INTERSECTION OF STATE ROUTE 318 AND
SYMONS ROAD AND FINALLY ENDED AT THE INTERSECTION OF LOIS LANE AND
NORTH STONE BASE ROAD OFF OF STATE ROUTE 318.

DAMAGE AT THE START OF THE TORNADO TRACK CONSISTED OF A THIRD OF A
ROOF FROM A BARN BLOWN OFF AND THROWN APPROXIMATELY 30 YARDS IN
DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS...INCLUDING A PIECE THAT WAS EMBEDDED INTO
THE GROUND. NUMEROUS TREES WERE SNAPPED AND UPROOTED AT THE
LOCATION.

SPORADIC DAMAGE OF TREES SNAPPED OFF AND UPROOTED WERE OBSERVED
BETWEEN THE STARTING AND ENDING LOCATIONS OF THE TORNADO TRACK.

DAMAGE AT THE END OF THE TORNADO TRACK CONSISTED OF NUMEROUS SOFT
AND HARDWOOD TREES SNAPPED AND UPROOTED. A BARN WITH A NEW METAL
ROOF WAS HALF BLOWN OFF AND THROWN IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS OF UP
TO APPROXIMATELY 50 YARDS AWAY. A METAL GATED FENCE WAS DAMAGED
AND BLOWN OVER NEXT TO THE BARN. ROOF DAMAGE WAS ALSO OBSERVED TO
A SINGLE FAMILY HOME.

THE MAXIMUM WIDTH OF THE TORNADO APPEARED TO BE APPROXIMATELY 150
YARDS AND THE PATH LENGTH WAS 2.46 MILES WITH INTERMITTENT DAMAGE
OBSERVED BETWEEN THE STARTING AND ENDING POINTS OF THE EF-1 TORNADO.

LINE WIND DAMAGE IN JACKSON CENTER IN MERCER COUNTY WESTERN
PENNSYLVANIA ON JULY 8 2014.

PRELIMINARY INFORMATION FROM THE STORM SURVEY DONE BY THE NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE IN PITTSBURGH INDICATES STRAIGHT LINE WINDS CAUSED
DAMAGE ALONG A 1.4 MILE STRETCH OF US HIGHWAY 62 AND STATE ROUTE 965
IN JACKSON CENTER IN MERCER COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA.

DAMAGE CONSISTED OF NUMEROUS SOFTWOOD TREES SNAPPED OFF AND
UPROOTED AND A FEW HARDWOOD TREES UPROOTED. A LONG PLASTIC FENCE
WAS BLOWN OVER IN A BACKYARD AND SOME ROOF DAMAGE OF SEVERAL SINGE
FAMILY HOMES AND GARAGES WAS OBSERVED.

A MICROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECTED OUTFLOW
AREA OF LESS THAN 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING LESS
THAN 5 MINUTES. MICROBURSTS MAY INDUCE DANGEROUS
HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL WIND SHEARS...WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT
AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE AND CAUSE PROPERTY DAMAGE. STRAIGHT-LINE
WINDS ARE GENERALLY ANY WIND THAT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH
ROTATION...USED MAINLY TO DIFFERENTIATE THEM FROM TORNADIC WINDS.
