STRAIGHT LINE WINDS FROM A THUNDERSTORM TUESDAY EVENING CAUSED AT
LEAST 50 TREES TO FALL IN GLENWILLARD. AT LEAST FOUR HOMES WERE
DAMAGED DUE TO FALLEN TREES. THE DAMAGE PATH WAS BOUNDED BY
HARPER ROAD AND BOCKTOWN ROAD. DAMAGE WAS ALSO EVIDENT ACROSS
STATE ROUTE 51 /MCGOVERN BOULEVARD WHERE TWO TREES FELL ON HOMES
BETWEEN HINDMARK STREET AND MCKEE ROAD. THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATION
OF TREES DOWN WERE ON THE HILLSIDE ADJACENT TO SAINT CATHERINE OF
SIENA CHURCH ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF STATE ROUTE 151.

WINDS OF THIS MAGNITUDE CAUSED THE NUMEROUS DOWNED POWER LINES
ALONG STATE ROUTE 228 IN CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP.

FOR REFERENCE...
A DOWNBURST OCCURS WHEN COLD AIR HIGH IN A THUNDERSTORM DESCENDS
AND ACCELERATES. AS THE STREAM OF COLD AIR REACHES THE GROUND...
IT SPREADS OUT AND CAN ACCELERATE FURTHER. WHEN ENVIRONMENTAL
CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE...WIND IN A DOWNBURST CAN EXCEED 80 TO
100 MPH. SUCH WIND IS COMPARABLE TO OR STRONGER THAN MANY
TORNADOES AND CAN CAUSE SIMILAR DAMAGE. IN SOME CASES...HAIL AND
VERY HEAVY RAIN ALSO ACCOMPANY THE DOWNBURST...LEADING TO FLOODING
AND SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE FROM WIND-DRIVEN HAIL.

A LOCALIZED DOWN BURST IS CALLED A MICROBURST. THE STRONGEST
MICROBURST RECORDED PRODUCED A WIND GUST TO 158 MPH ON 1 AUGUST
1983 AT ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE IN MARYLAND. THIS DOWNBURST WAS
ANALYZED IN DETAIL BY DR. TED FUJITA...WHO PIONEERED THE CONCEPT
OF WIND DAMAGE SURVEYS.
