...SURF ZONE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN...

THE FOLLOWING IS THE LAST IN THIS SERIES OF SEVEN DAILY SURF ZONE
AWARENESS PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENTS, BROUGHT TO YOU BY YOUR
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE.

WHILE RIP CURRENTS ARE AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY KILLER, AND SHORE BREAK
THE SAME FOR SURF ZONE INJURIES, LIGHTNING CANNOT BE AN IGNORED
DANGER.

IN THE UNITED STATES, AN AVERAGE OF ABOUT 50 PEOPLE A YEAR ARE
KILLED BY LIGHTNING. WHEN THUNDER ROARS, GO INDOORS! THE SAFEST
PLACE DURING LIGHTNING ACTIVITY IS A LARGE ENCLOSED BUILDING, NOT A
SHED. THE SECOND SAFEST PLACE IS AN ENCLOSED METAL VEHICLE, CAR,
TRUCK OR VAN....NOT A CONVERTIBLE, BIKE OR ANY SOFT TOP VEHICLE.
LIGHTNING CAN STRIKE THE GROUND FROM THE ANVIL, WAY ON THE BACK PART
OF THE STORM AND SO FOR ULTIMATE SAFETY, WAIT 30 MINUTES UNTIL AFTER
THE LAST CRACK OF THUNDER BEFORE RETURNING TO THE BEACH.

THE SHORE IS A FUN PLAYGROUND. KEEP IT YOUR FRIEND BY SWIMMING IN
THE PRESENCE OF LIFEGUARDS AND KNOW BEFORE YOU GO, THE RIP CURRENT
RISK.

FOR THAT, YOU CAN ACCESS HELPFUL INFORMATION BY GOING TO
WWW.WEATHER.GOV/PHI/SURFRIP4

WHEN GETTING TO THE BEACH, DON`T BE AFRAID TO ASK THE LIFEGUARDS
ABOUT RIP CURRENTS. IF IN DOUBT ABOUT THE CONDITIONS, DON`T GO OUT!

COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS AWARENESS SERIES CAN BE SENT TO
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WEBMASTER, OR FACEBOOK PAGE.
