THIS IS THE THIRD IN A SERIES OF SEVEN DAILY SURF ZONE AWARENESS
PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENTS BROUGHT TO YOU BY YOUR NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE.

WHILE RIP CURRENT FORECASTING IS GENERAL, BY SUMMER 2018 THERE IS
HOPE FOR MORE BEACH SPECIFIC INFORMATION. FORECASTS OF HOURLY RISK
FOR THE FORMATION OF DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS OUT TO 4 DAYS IN
ADVANCE, MAY BECOME AVAILABLE HERE BY SUMMER 2018.

THIS PROBABILISTIC RIP CURRENT INFORMATION IS ALREADY BEING TESTED
NEAR MIAMI FLORIDA. IT IS BASED ON TOTAL WATER LEVEL, WHICH
INCORPORATES SWELL, PERIOD, THE WIND WAVE DRIVEN BY OFFSHORE OR
ONSHORE WINDS, AS WELL AS TIDE AND BEACH BATHYMETRY.

THAT INFORMATION COULD BECOME HELPFUL IN PLANNING YOUR USE OF THE
BEACH FOR A PARTICULAR DAY. STILL, IT IS THE SWIMMER WHO NEEDS TO
KNOW HOW TO SURVIVE A RIP CURRENT.

RIP CURRENTS CAN BE TRANSITORY. MOST ARE WEAK BUT ON MODERATE OR
HIGH RISK DAYS, THE CONDITIONS ARE MORE FAVORABLE FOR THE FORMATION
OF POWERFUL RIP CURRENTS.

JETTIES AND PIERS, ESPECIALLY ON THE SIDE WHERE THE SWELL COMES
IN, ARE NOTORIOUS FOR RECURRENT RIP CURRENT FORMATION AND
DEFINITELY NOT ADVISED SWIMMING ZONES.

TOMORROW WE`LL TALK MORE ABOUT THE NATURE OF RIP CURRENTS AND
SURVIVAL, IF CAUGHT IN ONE.
