...SPRING SWINGS IN MAY...

MAY BROUGHT BOTH A TASTE OF SUMMER AND LATE SEASON COLD SPELLS TO
WESTERN NEW YORK...WHICH IS NOT FAR FROM NORMAL AS WE TRANSITION
INTO THE SUMMER MONTHS. A COLD UPPER LEVEL LOW BROUGHT SNOW FLURRIES
TO THE REGION THE SECOND WEEK OF THE MONTH. THEN TO CLOSE THE MONTH
A WARM SPELL THE LAST WEEK OF THE MONTH BROUGHT THE WARMEST DAY OF
THE MONTH ON THE LAST DAY OF MAY. THERE WERE SEVERAL DAYS WITH
THUNDERSTORMS...AND SOME OF THESE STORMS BROUGHT SITES TO ABOVE
NORMAL PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH.

OVER HALF THE MONTH HAD DAYS THAT AVERAGED 10 DEGREES OR MORE FROM
NORMAL...WITH ABOVE NORMAL DAYS OUTNUMBERING THE BELOW NORMAL DAYS.
THIS LEAD TO AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 61.4 DEGREES THAT WAS 4.4F
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. DESPITE THESE ANOMALIES THERE WERE NO RECORD
EXTREMES. THERE WERE 8 DAYS THAT REACHED THE 80F MARK...ABOUT 3 MORE
THAN THE NORM.

PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH FINISHED ABOVE NORMAL...WITH THE 3.96
INCHES OF PRECIPITATION JUST OVER AN INCH ABOVE NORMAL. SNOW
FLURRIES FLEW ON THE 12TH AND 13TH. THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ON 7 DAYS
THIS MONTH...WITH STORMS THE LAST SEVERAL DAYS OF THE MONTH BRINGING
ABOUT HALF OF THE MONTHLY RAINFALL. THERE WERE NO NEW RECORD
PRECIPITATION EVENTS FOR THE MONTH.

THE MONTH BEGAN WARM...PLEASANT AND SUNNY BEFORE A COLD LOW SETTLED
OVER THE REGION WITH SEVERAL DAYS OF RAIN AND SNOW FLURRIES. MID
MONTH A TASTE OF SUMMER GREETED THE REGION AS THE MERCURY CLIMBED
INTO THE 80S WITH THUNDERSTORMS. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A BRIEF SWING
BACK TOWARDS COOLER WEATHER WITH HIGHS ONLY IN THE 50S ON THE 24TH
AND 25TH. A SLOW WARMING TREND TOWARDS THE END OF THE MONTH BROUGHT
THUNDERSTORMS BY MONTHS END AND TEMPERATURES BACK INTO THE
80S...PEAKING AT 90F ON THE LAST DAY OF THE MONTH WHICH WAS ALSO THE
WARMEST TEMPERATURE RECORDING FOR THE MONTH.

MAY WAS A SUNNY MONTH...WITH SUNSHINE 12 PERCENT ABOVE THE NORMAL OF
58 PERCENT. THERE WERE 21 DAYS THAT WERE MOSTLY SUNNY...INCLUDING 7
DAYS WITH FULL SUNSHINE.

ALL IN ALL A SUNNY AND WARM MAY...INTERRUPTED A FEW TIMES BY LATE
SEASON CHILLS.

HERE ARE SOME STATISTICS FOR THE 3 MONTH SPRING PERIOD FOR
ROCHESTER...(NORMALS)

TEMPERATURE.... 47.2 (45.9)
PRECIPITATION.. 7.52 (8.10)
SNOWFALL....... 14.2 (20.6)
