...FLOOD SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK MARCH 16 THROUGH 20 OF 2015...

...TODAY`S TOPIC: FLASH FLOODING...

FLASH FLOODING MEANS EXACTLY WHAT THE NAME IMPLIES: FLOODS HAPPENING IN
A FLASH. CAUSES OF FLASH FLOODING INCLUDE HEAVY RAIN...DEBRIS JAMS
(MUDSLIDES)...LEVEE FAILURE...AND DAM FAILURE. FLASH FLOODS TYPICALLY
EXHIBIT A VERY RAPID RISE OF WATER AND OFTEN RESULT IN DANGEROUS
SWIFT FLOWING WATER.

BY FAR THE MOST COMMON REASON FOR FLASH FLOODING IN THE SOUTHEAST
UNITED STATES RESULTS FROM THUNDERSTORMS DUMPING COPIOUS RAINFALL IN
A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME...SAY IN AN HOUR OR UP TO SIX HOURS. THESE
SUDDEN DOWNPOURS CAN RAPIDLY RAISE WATER LEVELS IN A BAYOU OR CREEK
AND TURN THEM INTO VIOLENT AND RAGING RIVERS.

URBAN AREAS REMAIN ESPECIALLY PRONE TO FLASH FLOODING DUE TO LARGE
AREAS OF CONCRETE AND ASPHALT THAT DO NOT ALLOW WATER TO PERMEATE
INTO THE SOILS EASILY. REMEMBER TO AVOID LOW LYING AREAS AND STORM
DRAINS WHEN HEAVY RAINFALL DEVELOPS.

REMEMBER WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING AND SEE A FLOODED ROADWAY...TURN
AROUND...DON`T DROWN.
