DROUGHT INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RAPID CITY SD
720 AM MDT THU OCT 26 2016

...RECENT DRY CONDITIONS HAVE CAUSED AN EXPANSION OF DROUGHT
CONDITIONS ACROSS WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA AND NORTHEASTERN WYOMING...

SYNOPSIS...

VERY DRY CONDITIONS FOR THE PAST 30 TO 60 DAYS HAVE RESULTED IN AN
EXPANSION OF DROUGHT CONDITIONS ACROSS WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA
AND NORTHEASTERN WYOMING.

SEVERE (D2) DROUGHT CONDITIONS COVERED PARTS OF WESTERN HARDING AND
NORTHWESTERN BUTTE COUNTIES IN SOUTH DAKOTA AND SOUTHWESTERN CROOK
AND NORTHERN WESTON COUNTIES IN NORTHEASTERN WYOMING. MODERATE (D1)
DROUGHT CONDITIONS COVERED THE REST OF CROOK AND WESTON COUNTIES AND
PORTIONS OF NORTHEASTERN CAMPBELL COUNTIES IN WYOMING. IN WESTERN
SOUTH DAKOTA, MODERATE (D1) DROUGHT CONDITIONS COVERED THE REST OF
HARDING COUNTY AND BUTTE COUNTIES AS WELL AS MOST OF PERKINS,
WESTERN ZIEBACH, MEADE, LAWRENCE, PENNINGTON, CUSTER, FALL RIVER,
NORTHERN OGLALA LAKOTA, WESTERN JACKSON, AND WESTERN HAAKON
COUNTIES. ABNORMALLY DRY (D0) CONDITIONS COVERED THE REST OF THE
AREA.

SUMMARY OF IMPACTS...

* RANCHERS AND FARMERS ARE EXPERIENCING LITTLE IF ANY HAY PRODUCTION.
* STOCK PONDS AND DUGOUTS ARE LOW, WHICH IS LIMITING WATER FOR
  CATTLE AND OTHER ANIMALS.
* DRY FUELS HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO SEVERAL WILDFIRES THIS YEAR.

CLIMATE SUMMARY...

SO FAR THIS YEAR TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN ABOVE AVERAGE. MAY AND JUNE
WERE EXTREMELY DRY WITH MOST LOCATIONS RECEIVING ONLY A THIRD OF
THEIR TYPICAL RAINFALL. IN JULY, RAINFALL AMOUNTS VARIED WITH SOME
LOCATIONS REPORTING BELOW AVERAGE AMOUNTS AND OTHER SPOTS ABOVE
AVERAGE. IN AUGUST, RAINFALL AMOUNTS IN MOST LOCATIONS WERE ABOVE
AVERAGE; THE EXCEPTION WAS OVER FAR NORTHWESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA AND
FAR SOUTH WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA, WHERE RAINFALL AMOUNTS WERE SLIGHTLY
BELOW AVERAGE. IN SEPTEMBER, TEMPERATURES AND PRECIPITATION WERE
MAINLY AROUND AVERAGE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF AN AREA EAST OF RAPID
CITY THAT MISSED OUT ON MOST OF THE RAINFALL. OVERALL...OCTOBER
HAS BEEN WARM AND DRY.

PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK...

SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES (SST) ACROSS THE EQUATORIAL PACIFIC OCEAN
ARE BELOW AVERAGE WHICH INDICATES LA NINA IS DEVELOPING. THIS TREND
IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE WINTER.

THE OUTLOOK FOR NOVEMBER INDICATES THERE IS A GREATER CHANCE FOR
ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES WITH EQUAL CHANCES FOR ABOVE, BELOW AND
AVERAGE PRECIPITATION.

NEXT ISSUANCE...

THE NEXT DROUGHT STATEMENT WILL BE ISSUED IN NOVEMBER.
