...ASTORIA 2013 WEATHER IN REVIEW...

================================================================
MONTHLY RECAPS...

JANUARY...RATHER TYPICAL MONTH FOR ASTORIA. STRONG FRONT ON THE
8TH BROUGHT GUSTY SOUTH WINDS...WITH GUSTS 45 TO 55 MPH.
COOL WEATHER BROUGHT LOWS IN THE 20S BY THE 12TH...WITH A
CHILLY EAST WIND THAT GUSTED 35 TO 45 MPH.

FEBRUARY...PLENTY OF CLOUDS...WITH NEAR NORMAL RAINFALL. CLOUDS
KEPT TEMPERATURES COOLER THAN USUAL DURING THE DAY...BUT
A TAD WARMER AT NIGHT. STRONGEST FRONT BROUGHT SOUTH WINDS
OF 45 TO 60 MPH ON THE 22ND.

MARCH...RATHER BENIGN MONTH OF WEATHER. HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE
REGION WEAKENED FRONTS AS THEY PUSHED INTO THE REGION. AS A
RESULT...FRONTS BROUGHT LESS RAINFALL. STRONGEST FRONT ON
THE 20TH PRODUCED STRONG SOUTH WINDS WITH GUSTS 55 TO 70 MPH.

APRIL...MILD MONTH...WITH MORE RAIN THAN NORMAL. RATHER WARM
STRETCH BETWEEN THE 22ND AND 26TH...WHEN TEMPERATURES CLIMBED
WELL INTO THE 60S AND EVEN LOWER 70S.

MAY...STARTED MILD AND DRY WITH HIGHS IN THE 80S ON THE 4TH AND
5TH. BUT MORE SEASONABLE WEATHER RETURNED BY MID MONTH...AS
DID THE RAIN. MAY RAINFALL WAS NEAR DOUBLE THE NORMAL. ON
THE 23RD...OVER TWO INCHES OF RAIN FELL AT ASTORIA AIRPORT.

JUNE...LIKE MAY...JUNE WAS MILD BUT WET. OVERALL...RATHER BENIGN.

JULY...HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE NORTHEAST PACIFIC GREW STRONGER IN
JULY. THIS BROUGHT DRY WEATHER AS THE STORM TRACK SHIFTED
NORTH OF ASTORIA. IT WAS THE 3RD DRIEST JULY SINCE 1890 AS
ONLY JULY 1896 AND JULY 1960 WERE DRIER WITH 0.01 INCH.

AUGUST...AUGUST CONTINUED WHERE JULY ENDED...DRY THAN NORMAL.
UPPER LOW PRESSURE OFF THE SOUTH OREGON COAST BECAME THE
DOMINANT WEATHER PATTERN. THIS KEPT REGION UNDER MILD AIR
BUT DRY. REMAINS OF AN OLD WEST PACIFIC TYPHOON ARRIVED
IN THE LAST WEEK...WITH FIRST SIGNIFICANT RAIN SINCE MAY.

SEPTEMBER...STARTED DRY AND MILD...WITH HIGHS IN THE 70S. BUT
THE CLASSIC SWITCH TO FALL STARTED AFTER THE 20TH. STRONG
FRONTS BROUGHT ROUNDS OF HEAVY RAIN ON THE 22ND AND AGAIN
ON THE 27TH THROUGH THE 29TH. EVEN THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED
ON THE 28TH AND 29TH. 3 TO 4 INCHES OF RAIN FELL DURING
THOSE TWO DAYS AROUND THE ASTORIA AREA.

OCTOBER...HIGH PRESSURE BROUGHT MILD AND DRY WEATHER. AFTER A
WET START...MOST DAYS WERE DRY. WITH MOST CLEAR SKIES AT
NIGHT...AREAS OF FOG BECAME COMMON SITE IN THE MORNING.

NOVEMBER...MILD TEMPERATURES AND RAIN THROUGH MID MONTH. SOUTH
WINDS GUSTED 45 TO 55 MPH ON THE 2ND AND 3RD AS STRONGEST
FRONT MOVED ONSHORE. BUT STORM TRACK SHIFTED IN RESPONSE
TO HIGH PRESSURE BUILDING OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST BROUGHT
MUCH DRIER CONDITIONS FOR 19TH THROUGH THE 29TH. HIGHS WERE
MILD WITH 50S...BUT TEMPERATURES DROPPED INTO THE LOWER 30S
AT NIGHT UNDER MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES.

DECEMBER...STARTED MILD...BUT ARCTIC OUTBREAK OF COLD AIR THAT
PUSHED INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ON THE 3RD AND 4TH ARRIVED
TO THE COASTAL AREAS BY THE 5TH. TEMPERATURES DROPPED BELOW
FREEZING ON THE 6TH...AND DID NOT WARM ABOVE FREEZING AGAIN
UNTIL LATER ON THE 10TH. COLDEST NIGHT WAS 13 DEG ON THE 8TH.
DURING THE COLD SNAP...OCCASIONAL LIGHT SNOW FELL BUT MOST
ACCUMULATION WAS LESS THAN ONE INCH. WARMER WEATHER RETURNED
BY THE 12TH...WITH SEASONABLE WEATHER. WITH LACK OF STRONG
    FRONTS...RAINFALL WAS BELOW NORMAL.
