================================================================
MONTHLY WEATHER RECAPS...

JANUARY...DESPITE THE DRYNESS OVER OTHER PARTS OF OREGON...THE
STORM TRACK FAVORED ASTORIA WITH SEVERAL MOIST FRONTS. RAIN
FELL ON NEARLY EVERY DAY...WITH EVEN A LITTLE WET SNOW ON
THE 2ND...BUT NO ACCUMULATION. HEAVIEST RAIN FELL ON THE
4TH INTO THE 5TH WHEN 3 TO 5 INCHES OF RAIN FELL OVER THE
ASTORIA AREA. AIRPORT RECORDED 3.87 INCHES OF RAIN. THIS LED
TO NEAR MAJOR FLOODING ON RIVERS SUCH AS NASELLE AND GRAYS.
ANOTHER STRONG FRONT BROUGHT HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG SOUTH
WINDS ON THE 16TH TO 17TH. ANOTHER 2-4 INCHES OF RAIN FELL
WITH WINDS GUSTING 50 TO 60 MPH. JANUARY CLOSED ON THE DRY
SIDE...BUT MILD DAYS AND COOL NIGHTS LED TO PLENTY OF LATE
NIGHT AND MORNING DENSE FOG FROM 28TH THROUGH THE 31ST.

FEBRUARY...RAINFALL WAS NEAR NORMAL...WITH HEAVIEST PERIOD OF
RAIN FROM THE 5TH THROUGH THE 9TH. THIS WAS ALSO A RATHER
BREEZY PERIOD...WITH SOUTHERLY WINDS GUSTING 45 TO 60 MPH.
STRONGEST WIND GUST AT ASTORIA AIRPORT WAS 55 MPH ON 5TH.
ONCE AGAIN...LOCAL RIVERS REACHED FLOOD STAGE...BUT WORST
WAS TO NORTH OF ASTORIA ON THE GRAYS RIVER.

THIS WAS A VERY MILD FEBRUARY FOR ASTORIA...WITH AVERAGE
MEAN TEMPERATURE OF 49.5 DEG...AND AVG HIGHS NEAR 57 DEG.
FEBRUARY 2015 WAS 5TH WARMEST FOR ASTORIA AREA DATING BACK
TO 1890...AND THE 2ND WARMEST FOR THE ASTORIA AIRPORT. IN
EVERY DAY IN FEBRUARY 2015 WAS AT LEAST 50 DEG...WHICH IS
TIES THE RECORD FOR MOST DAYS IN FEBRUARY WITH DAILY HIGH
   OF AT LEAST 50 DEG...WHICH IS 28 SET IN 1983, 1958, 1941,
   1934 AND NOW 2015.

MARCH...LIKE FEBRUARY...MARCH WAS MILD WITH NEAR NORMAL RAIN.
BUT THE MOST ACTIVE WEATHER OCCURRED ON THE IDES OF MARCH.
STRONG SOUTHERLY WINDS AND HEAVY RAIN ACCOMPANIED FRONTS
ON MARCH 13 TO 15TH. THE ASTORIA AREA RECEIVED 3-6 INCHES
OF RAIN...ALONG WITH WINDS OF 65 TO 75 MPH. STRONGEST WINDS
OCCURRED ON THE 15TH...WHEN ASTORIA AIRPORT RECORDED GUST
OF 67 MPH. WINDS TOPPLED TREES AND KNOCKED OUT POWER.

APRIL...RATHER NORMAL APRIL...ALBEIT A BIT ON THE DRIER SIDE.
PLENTY OF TYPICAL SPRING SHOWERS AROUND THE REGION FROM
1ST THROUGH THE 10TH...ALONG WITH A FEW THUNDERSTORMS ON
5TH AND AGAIN ON THE 8TH. ONE STORM PRODUCED A FUNNEL
CLOUD NEAR TILLAMOOK ON THE 8TH. BUT NO DAMAGE REPORTED.
A BRIEF BURST OF NICE WEATHER OCCURRED ON THE 27TH...WHEN
AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES CLIMBED INTO THE LOWER 80S.

MAY...FINALLY...A QUITE PLEASANT MONTH FOR GARDNERS...AS
RAINFALL WAS BELOW NORMAL AND TEMPERATURES CONTINUED MILD.
MOST DAYS SAW TEMPERATURES IN THE 60S...WITH A FEW DAYS
   IN THE 70S.

JUNE...PATTERN SHIFT OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST BROUGHT MORE
DOMINANT HIGH PRESSURE...WHICH IN TURN WEAKENED INCOMING
FRONTS. THIS RESULTED IN DRIER AND MILDER THAN NORMAL
CONDITIONS FOR THE ASTORIA AREA. EVERY DAY WAS AT LEAST
   60 DEG...WITH 10 DAYS WHERE TEMPERATURES CLIMBED ABOVE 70
DEG. THIS WAS THE MOST SINCE JUNE 1948. RAINFALL WAS ONLY
0.73 INCH...NEARLY 2 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. MOST EXCITING
WEATHER OCCURRED ON THE 27TH INTO THE 28TH. AFTER A WARM
DAY WITH HIGH OF 85 ON JUNE 27...THUNDERSTORMS ROLLED INTO
THE REGION ON THE 28TH...COOLING TEMPERATURES DOWN ABOUT
   25 DEG OVERNIGHT.

JULY...A WARM AND DRY MONTH WAS JULY 2015. DAILY HIGHS WERE
70 DEG OR WARMEST ON ALL BUT 9 DAYS...AND EVEN THOSE WERE
ONLY IN THE UPPER 60S. THERE WERE 22 DAYS WITH HIGHS OF
AT LEAST 70 DEG...WHICH IS THE MOST SINCE 1941. ONSHORE
FLOW WAS RATHER WEAK...WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO THE WARMER
TEMPERATURES. NIGHTS WERE MILD AS WELL...WITH A RECORD 8
NIGHTS WITH OVERNIGHT LOWS OF 60 DEG OR WARMER. IT WAS
THE 5TH WARMEST JULY ON RECORD FOR THE ASTORIA AREA...AND
THE WARMEST FOR THE ASTORIA AIRPORT.

AUGUST...GREAT SUMMER BEACH WEATHER CONTINUED IN EARLY AUGUST
WITH SUNNY DAYS AND MILD TEMPERATURES. A FEW FRONTS DID
   BRING A LITTLE RAIN...BUT NOT A LOT. HOWEVER...A RARE
EVENT IN LATE AUGUST OCCURRED...A STRONG FRONT. THIS FRONT
BROUGHT SOME OF THE STRONGEST WINDS EVER SEEN IN AUGUST
FOR THE REGION...ALONG WITH DECENT SHOT OF RAIN. STRONGEST
WINDS IN AUGUST ARE USUALLY GENERATED BY THUNDERSTORMS.
BUT NOT THIS YEAR...AS A VERY STRONG PACIFIC FRONT SLAMMED
THE COASTAL AREAS ON THE 29TH. WINDS GUSTED 55 TO 70 MPH
ALONG THE NORTH OREGON AND SOUTH WASHINGTON COAST... WITH
A GUST OF 62 MPH AT THE ASTORIA AIRPORT. THIS WAS THE
STRONGEST WIND GUST ON RECORD FOR ASTORIA FOR ANY AUGUST.
PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 48 MPH BACK IN 2012. WITH TREES FULL
OF LEAVES...THERE WAS CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF BROKEN LIMBS
AND DOWNED POWER LINES. THESE WINDS MADE A BIG MESS AT
THE FINISH AREA OF THE HOOD-TO-COAST RELAYS AT SEASIDE.

SEPTEMBER...A DELIGHTFUL MONTH...WITH MILD TEMPERATURES AND
NEAR NORMAL RAINFALL. THE HIGH OF 76 DEG ON 28TH CAPPED
WHAT WAS FOR THE MOST PART A GREAT SUMMER. FOR 2015...
THERE WERE 72 DAYS WITH DAILY HIGHS OF AT LEAST 70 DEG.
THE LAST TIME THERE WERE AT LEAST THIS MANY DAYS WAS WAY
   BACK IN 1942.

OCTOBER...LIKE SEPTEMBER...OCTOBER WAS A PLEASANT MONTH WITH
MILD TEMPERATURES AND NEAR NORMAL RAINFALL. THANKS IN PART
TO MORE CLOUD COVER AT NIGHT...OVERNIGHT LOWS WERE MILDER
THAN NORMAL. OCTOBER 2015 TIED 1937 AND 2014 AS THE 2ND
WARMEST OCTOBER ON RECORD (SINCE 1892)...WITH AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 58.1 DEG (5.5 DEG ABOVE NORMAL). ON AN ODD
NOTE...DAILY TEMPERATURES IN OCTOBER 2015 WERE NEARLY
IDENTICAL TO THOSE OF OCTOBER 2014...AS BOTH ENDED WITH
THE SAME AVERAGE TEMPERATURE. HMMMM...TRICK OR TREAT?

WEATHER WAS UNEVENTFUL FOR THE MOST PART. BUT THAT CHANGED
IN THE CLOSING DAYS OF OCTOBER. AN ACTIVE HURRICANE SEASON
OVER THE TROPICAL PACIFIC OCEAN CONTRIBUTED TO BOOSTING THE
MOISTURE CONTENT OF STORMS HEADED FOR THE PAC NW. ONE SUCH
STORM ARRIVED ON HALLOWEEN...WITH A LOT OF RAIN AND GUSTY
WINDS TO THE REGION. IT WAS A SOGGY HALLOWEEN...WITH 3-6
INCHES OF RAIN FALLING ACROSS THE ASTORIA AREA FROM 30TH
THROUGH THE 31ST. A COMMON SIGHT ACROSS REGION WAS FLOODED
INTERSECTIONS AND OTHER LOW-LYING AREAS DUE TO A COMBINATION
OF TOO MUCH RAIN FALLING TOO FAST AND LEAF-CLOGGED DRAINS.

NOVEMBER...IT WAS A WET MONTH FOR THE ASTORIA AREA...THANKS TO
SEVERAL VERY MOIST FRONTS THAT PUSHED ACROSS AREA BETWEEN THE
   7TH AND 18TH. FOR A PERIOD OF THE 12TH TO 14TH...ABOUT 6 TO
10 INCHES OF RAIN FELL ACROSS THE REGION...WITH FLOODING ON
MANY LOCAL RIVERS. HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE REGION LATE IN THE
MONTH BROUGHT SUNSHINE AND COOL EASTERLY WINDS. DESPITE MILD
AFTERNOONS WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER 40S TO LOWER 50S...
OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURES WERE FROSTY WITH LOWS NEAR 30 DEG.

DECEMBER...IT WAS A DECEMBER TO REMEMBER. THE MOISTURE LADEN
UPPER WINDS CONTINUE TO FEED INCOMING FRONTS...WITH HEAVY
RAIN FALLING ACROSS THE REGION FROM TIME TO TIME. DURING
THE 7TH TO 8TH...A NEAR STATIONARY FRONT SAT OVER THE REGION
DROPPING OVER 6 INCHES OF RAIN. ANOTHER SLOW MOVING FRONT
ON THE 17TH BROUGH ANOTHER 4 TO 7 INCHES OF RAIN TO THE
REGION. THIS FRONT ON THE 17TH INTO THE 18TH BROUGHT 3.35
INCHES OF RAIN IN ONLY 24 HOURS. DECEMBER 2015 FINISHED
WITH 20.53 INCHES OF RAIN FOR ASTORIA AIRPORT...WHICH IS THE
2ND WETTEST DECEMBER ON RECORD (RECORD IS 36.07 INCHES IN
1933). AREAS NEARBY COAST RANGE HAD OVER 30 INCHES OF RAIN.

EACH STRONG FRONT BROUGHT A ROUND OF GUSTY SOUTHERLY WINDS.
FROM THE 6TH TO THE 10TH...SOUTH WINDS FREQUENTLY GUSTED
45 TO 65 MPH...WITH GUSTS TO 70 MPH AT CLATSOP SPIT. ANOTHER
ROUND OF STRONG WINDS ARRIVED ON 21ST...WITH GUSTS 50 TO 60 MPH.
IN ADDITION TO WINDS AND RAIN...COASTAL FLOODING WAS COMMON
DUE TO COMBINATION OF HIGH TIDES AND RIVERS RUNNING HIGH.

THERE WERE 24 DAYS WITH AT LEAST A QUARTER OF AN INCH
OF RAIN...BREAKING THE OLD DECEMBER RECORD OF 22 SUCH DAYS
BACK IN 1933. ALSO...THE 23 CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITH AT LEAST
A QUARTER OF AN INCH OF RAIN IS A NEW RECORD FOR DECEMBER...
BREAKING OLD RECORD OF 14 SUCH DAYS SET IN 1999...AND BREAKS
THE ALL-TIME RECORD OF 19 CONSECUTIVE DAYS SET IN 1924.

ON THE 23RD AND 24TH...MUCH COOLER AIR PUSHED INTO THE REGION.
THIS BROUGHT SHOWERS...AND SNOW LEVELS DOWN AS LOW AS 900 FT
AT TIMES. THIS BROUGHT SNOW TO THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE
COAST RANGE...WITH 1 TO 4 INCHES REPORTED AT THE PASSES.

STRONG HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST BROUGHT COOL
AND DRY CONDITIONS TO THE REGION ON THE 30TH AND 31ST...WITH
ABUNDANT SUNSHINE BUT COOL EASTERLY WINDS.
