================================================================
2015 MONTHLY WEATHER RECAPS...

JANUARY...A RATHER UNEVENTFUL MONTH OF WEATHER. INCOMING FRONTS
WERE WEAK...AND BROUGHT LESS THAN NORMAL RAINFALL. HIGH
PRESSURE MID MONTH GAVE REGION STRING OF MILD DAYS. STRONGEST
FRONT MOVED ACROSS REGION ON THE 17TH-18TH...WITH BRINGING
ABOUT 1 TO 2 INCHES OF RAIN TO THE REGION. WITH THE MILDER
WEATHER...AND LESS CLOUDS AT NIGHT...THERE WERE 17 DAYS ON
WHICH DENSE FOG WAS REPORTED. NORMALLY THERE ARE 10 SUCH DAYS.
THE HIGH OF 68 ON THE 24TH WAS JUST 1 DEG SHY OF TYING THE
WARMEST DAY IN JANUARY EVER...WHICH WAS 69 DEG ON JAN 4 1914
AND ON JAN 22 AND 27 OF 1931.

FEBRUARY...WAS A VERY MILD FEBRUARY...WITH AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
5.3 DEG ABOVE NORMAL. THIS IS THE 6TH WARMEST FEBRUARY SINCE
   RECORDS BEGAN IN 1890.

MARCH...TREND OF MILD CONDITIONS CONTINUE INTO MARCH. LIKE
FEBRUARY...AVERAGE TEMPERATURES WERE WELL ABOVE NORMAL.
WAS THE THIRD WARMEST MARCH ON RECORD. 24 OF THE 31 DAYS
IN MARCH SAW TEMPERATURES ABOVE 60 DEG (NORMAL IS 8 WHILE
THE RECORD IS 26 SUCH DAYS IN 1934. A FEW FRONTS DID BRING
SOME RAINFALL TO THE REGION...MAINLY AROUND THE 11TH AND
BETWEEN THE 14TH AND 24TH. BUT WORST WEATHER OCCURRED ON
THE IDES OF MARCH...WHEN 1 TO 3 INCHES OF RAIN FELL. GUSTY
SOUTH WINDS HIT 35 TO 45 MPH..CAUSING SPOTTY POWER OUTAGES.

APRIL...RATHER NICE MONTH OF WEATHER. TEMPERATURES WARMED IN
THE 70S SEVERAL TIMES. RAINFALL WAS BIT BELOW NEAR NORMAL.
TYPICAL SPRING WEATHER FOR THE FIRST 10 DAYS OF THE MONTH
...WITH SHOWERS AND A FEW THUNDERSTORMS. MOST NOTABLE STORM
STRUCK ON THE 10TH...WHEN A TORNADO STRUCK AREAS NEAR THE
LANE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE. A FEW CARS WERE LIFTED OR
ROLLED IN THE STRONG WINDS. FORTUNATELY...NO FATALITIES.
SURVEYS BY THE NWS LATER DETERMINED THIS TO BE RATED AS AN
   EF0 TORNADO...WITH WINDS OF 65 TO 85 MPH.

MAY...MILD AND MOSTLY DRY. THIS WAS ONE OF THE MORE PLEASANT
MAYS IN RECENT YEARS...GREAT FOR GARDENERS AND OUTDOOR
ENTHUSIASTS. HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE REGION KEPT THE METRO
MILD AND DRY FOR THE LATTER HALF OF MAY. MAY CLOSED WITH
5 OF ITS LAST 5 DAYS WITH TEMPERATURES AT LEAST 75 DEG...
AND 3 OF THE LAST 5 DAYS WERE IN THE 80S.

JUNE...JUNE STARTED RAINY AND COOL...WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE
LOWER TO MIDDLE 60S. AFTER THE 3RD...LITTLE IF ANY RAIN FELL.
HIGH PRESSURE ESTABLISHED ITSELF OVER THE PAC NW AND COASTAL
WATERS...ACTING AS A BLOCK TO INCOMING FRONTS. AS A RESULT
MUCH DRIER AND WARMER TEMPERTURES OCCURRED. BY THE 6TH AND
7TH...AFTERNOON HIGHS CLIMBED INTO THE UPPER 80S AND 90S.
JUNE CLOSED WITH ITS LAST 8 DAYS WITH TEMPERATURES AT LEAST
IN THE MID 80S...WITH 5 DAYS IN THE 90S. IT WAS THE WARMEST
JUNE ON RECORD FOR EUGENE AREA...DATING BACK TO 1890.

NEW RECORDS FOR JUNE: (SINCE 1890).
WARMEST AVERAGE HIGHS: 83.6 DEG (OLD RECORD 82.2 IN 1951)
WARMEST MEAN TEMP: 67.2 DEG (OLD RECORD 65.7 IN 1926)
WARMEST OVERNIGHT LOW ON RECORD FOR MONTH OF JUNE...
            64 DEG ON THE 27TH.
RECORD MOST DAYS WITH AT LEAST 80 DEG...
23 DAYS (PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 20 DAYS IN JUNE 1951)
TIED MOST DAYS WITH AT OVERNIGHT LOW 60 DEG OR WARMER...
3 DAYS (RECORD WAS 3 DAYS IN JUNE 1973)
(PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 20 DAYS IN JUNE 1951)
TIED RECORD MOST CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITH NO RAIN (NOT A DROP)
25 DAYS (RECORD WAS 25 DAYS IN 1911).

JULY...HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE NORTHEAST PACIFIC GREW STRONGER IN
JULY. THIS MAINTAINED A RELATIVELY DRY AIR MASS OVER THE AREA.
BUT ONSHORE FLOW WAS NOT AS STRONG AS NORMALLY EXPECTED. SO
EVENING COOLING WAS NOT AS PRONOUNCED...LEAVING MANY NIGHTS
IN THE UPPER 50S TO LOWER 60S. AS FOR OVERNIGHT LOWS OF AT
   LEAST 55 DEG...THERE WERE 16 SUCH NIGHTS...BREAKING THE OLD
RECORD OF 15 1995 AND 1896. WHILE MOST DAYS WERE DRY...SOME
RAIN CAME WITH A FRONT ON THE 9TH AND THE 26TH. OVERALL A WARM
   JULY...WITH 13 DAYS ABOVE 90 DEG...AND A RECORD 6 DAYS OVER
100 DEG. IT WAS THE WARMEST JULY ON RECORD...WITH AN AVERAGE
TEMP OF 71.5 DEG (PREVIOUS RECORD WARMEST WAS 71.0 IN 1958).

AUGUST...RATHER NORMAL AUGUST...THOUGH WAS ON THE WARMER SIDE
THANKS IN PART TO MILDER NIGHTS. AGAIN...WITH WEAKER ONSHORE
FLOW...THE TYPICAL COOLING THAT OCCURS IN THE EVENING WAS NOT
AS PRONOUNCED. SMOKE FROM FIRES EAST OF THE CASCADES AND OVER
SOUTHWEST OREGON DRIFTED INTO THE EUGENE/SPRINGFIELD AREA FROM
TIME TO TIME...LOWERING AIR QUALITY AND CREATING DIFFICULTIES
IN BREATHING FOR SOME. WORST CONDITIONS WERE BETWEEN THE 22ND
AND 26TH. HIGH OF 100 DEG ON THE FIRST MAKES A NEW RECORD
FOR MOST DAYS IN A YEAR WITH 100 DEG OR WARMER. 2015 HAD 7
SUCH DAYS...BREAKING OLD RECORD OF 5 SET IN 1978.

A FRONT ARRIVE ON THE 29TH...PUSHING SMOKE BACK TO THE EAST
AND BRINGING RAIN AND BREEZY WINDS. THIS WAS INDEED A VERY
RARE WEATHER EVENT...AS MOST STRONG WINDS WEST OF CASCADES
ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THUNDERSTORMS...NOT FROM A STRONG FRONT
PUSHING ACROSS THE REGION. SOUTH WINDS GUSTED 30 TO 40 MPH
ACROSS THE SOUTH WILLAMETTE VALLEY AREA...WITH SOME DAMAGE
TO TREES MAINLY DUE TO HEAVY FOLIAGE. MOST COMMON WERE SPOTTY
POWER OUTAGES. AT THE EUGENE AIRPORT...A GUST OF 38 MPH WAS
THE STRONGEST GUST EVER RECORDED IN MONTH OF AUGUST.

SEPTEMBER...THIS WAS A VERY PLEASANT MONTH...WITH NEAR NORMAL
TEMPERATURES AND RAINFALL. WHEN ALL WAS SAID AND DONE FOR
THE WARM SEASON...2015 SUMMER TIED THAT OF 1967 AS THE
SECOND WARMEST SUMMER ON RECORD WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
OF 69.1 (WARMEST ON RECORD IS 2014 WITH AVERAGE 69.5 DEG).

OCTOBER...LIKE SEPTEMBER...OCTOBER WAS A PLEASANT MONTH WITH
MILD TEMPERATURES AND NEAR NORMAL RAINFALL. HOWEVER...THANKS
IN PART TO MORE CLOUD COVER AT NIGHT...OVERNIGHT LOWS WERE
MUCH MORE MILD THAN NORMAL. OCTOBER 2015 FINISHED AS SECOND
WARMEST OCTOBER ON RECORD (RECORD WAS OCTOBER 2014). ON THE
19TH...A FUNNEL CLOUD WAS REPORTED NEAR COBURG.

WEATHER WAS UNEVENTFUL FOR MOST PART. BUT THAT CHANGED IN THE
CLOSING DAYS OF OCTOBER. AN ACTIVE HURRICANE SEASON OVER THE
TROPICAL PACIFIC OCEAN CONTRIBUTED TO BOOSTING THE MOISTURE
CONTENT OF STORMS HEADED FOR THE PAC NW. ONE SUCH STORM
ARRIVED ON HALLOWEEN...WITH A LOT OF RAIN AND BREEZY SOUTHERLY
WINDS TO THE AREA. IT WAS THE FOURTH WETTEST HALLOWEEN ON
RECORD...WITH 1 TO 2 INCHES OF RAIN FALLING ACROSS THE EUGENE
   SPRINGFIELD AREA.

NOVEMBER...IT WAS A RATHER BENIGN MONTH...THOUGH A BIT DRIER SIDE.
WHILE FRONTS DID BRING SOME RAIN TO THE REGION...MOST OF THAT
RAIN FELL WELL NORTH OF THE EUGENE AREA. AS A RESULT...RAINFALL
FOR NOVEMBER WAS ABOUT 1/3RD OF NORMAL. HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE
REGION LATE IN THE MONTH BROUGHT SUNSHINE AND CHILLY NIGHTS WITH
OVERNIGHT LOWS DROPPING INTO THE UPPER TEENS.

DECEMBER...STARTED WET...AND GOT VERY WET. PERSISTENT STORM
TRACK KEPT VERY MOIST FRONTS PUSHING INTO THE REGION. ONE
OF THE MORE NOTABLE WAS ASSOCIATED WITH A MOIST ATMOSPHERIC
RIVER...AND BROUGHT WIND AND RAIN TO THE REGION ON THE 6TH
THROUGH THE 7TH. ON THE 7TH...WITH ANOTHER WET PERIOD ON THE
10TH TO 13TH. ANOTHER STRONG FRONT ROLLED ACROSS THE REGION
ON THE 21ST...WITH GUSTY SOUTHERLY WINDS.

AFTER THE STORM ON THE 21ST...MUCH COOLER AIR FILTERED INTO
THE SOUTH WILLAMETTE VALLEY...WITH SNOW LEVELS FALLING DOWN
TO AROUND 800 TO 1000 FEET. SHOWERS ON THE 22ND AND 23RD
BROUGHT SPOTTY LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS OF SNOW TO THE HILLS
AROUND EUGENE...AND ESPECIALLY IN THE COAST RANGE. THIS
COOL SHOWERY WEATHER LASTED UNTIL THE 28TH. AFTERWARDS...
HIGH PRESSURE BROUGHT DRY WEATHER. BUT WITH THE WET GROUND
AND COOL TEMPERATURES...IT ALSO BROUGHT FOG AND LOW CLOUDS.
