...JUNE 2015 NARRATIVE FOR HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT...

AT HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT...RAINFALL WAS WELL-ABOVE NORMAL AND
TEMPERATURES WERE VERY NEAR-NORMAL DURING JUNE 2015.

RAINFALL: ALTHOUGH THE MONTHLY TOTAL OF 8.05 INCHES WAS A NOTABLE
4.25" ABOVE THE 30-YEAR NORMAL...JUNE 2015 WAS ACTUALLY SLIGHTLY
DRIER THAN ONE YEAR AGO IN JUNE 2014 (8.69"). HOWEVER...THIS JUNE
STILL RANKED AS THE 6TH-WETTEST ON RECORD OUT OF 120 DATING TO 1896.
IT TRULY WAS A TALE OF TWO HALVES OF THE MONTH...AS THE VAST
MAJORITY OF JUNE RAIN (7.28") FELL DURING THE FIRST HALF...BEFORE A
NOTABLY DRIER WEATHER PATTERN SETTLED IN FOR THE LATTER HALF. THE
WETTEST TWO-DAY STRETCH OF THE MONTH CAME VERY EARLY ON...AS THE 4TH-
5TH COMBINED TO FEATURE A SIGNIFICANT 5.09". BY FAR THE WETTEST
INDIVIDUAL CALENDAR DAY OF THE MONTH WAS THE 4TH WITH 4.74" (1.90"
OF THIS FELL DURING THE EARLY MORNING WITH AN ADDITIONAL 2.84" LATER
THAT EVENING). NOT ONLY DID THIS SIGNIFICANT DAILY TOTAL ON THE 4TH
SHATTER THE PREVIOUS JUNE 4TH RECORD OF 3.45" SET IN 1915...BUT IT
ALSO WAS THE HIGHEST DAILY TOTAL ON RECORD FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF
JUNE (PREVIOUS RECORD 4.20" ON 6-24-1968). THIS ALSO MARKED THE 3RD-
HIGHEST DAILY RAINFALL ON RECORD FOR ANY DAY OF THE YEAR...TRAILING
ONLY TWO AUGUST TOTALS BACK IN 1969 AND 1990.

TEMPERATURES: FOR THE MONTH AS A WHOLE...IT WAS A VERY "NORMAL" JUNE
AS THE MEAN MONTHLY TEMPERATURE (BASED ON THE AVERAGE OF DAILY HIGHS
AND LOWS) WAS 72.0 DEGREES...ONLY 0.2 DEGREES ABOVE THE 30-YEAR
NORMAL. THE HOTTEST BRIEF STRETCH OF THE MONTH OCCURRED FROM THE 9TH-
10TH WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES OF 95 AND 94 DEGREES...WHICH WAS THEN
IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY THE COOLEST TWO-DAY STRETCH OF THE MONTH
WITH HIGHS OF ONLY 76 AND 65 DEGREES ON THE 11TH-12TH. OF THE 30
DAYS DURING JUNE...16 FEATURED AN ABOVE NORMAL DAILY MEAN
TEMPERATURE (INCLUDING NINE OF THE FIRST 10 DAYS)...13 DAYS HAD A
BELOW NORMAL DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE...AND ONE DAY EQUALED ITS
NORMAL DAILY MEAN.

SEVERE WEATHER/FLOODING/HIGH WINDS: HEAVY RAIN AND ASSOCIATED
FLOODING DOMINATED THE HEADLINES EARLY IN THE MONTH...AS FAIRLY
SIGNIFICANT FLOODING OF RURAL AREAS AND ALSO SEVERAL ROADWAYS
OCCURRED IN AND NEAR THE IMMEDIATE HASTINGS AREA IN THE WAKE OF THE
RECORD-SETTING RAINFALL ON THE 4TH. FORTUNATELY...HASTINGS WAS
LARGELY SPARED SEVERE WEATHER IN THE FORM OF LARGE HAIL/DAMAGING
WINDS DURING THE MONTH...WITH ONLY A SMATTERING OF PENNY TO QUARTER
SIZE HAIL REPORTED DURING THE EARLY MORNING OF THE 4TH. ON THE
EVENING OF THE 10TH...THE CITY NARROWLY MISSED BEING AFFECTED BY A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WITH DAMAGING WINDS THAT PASSED THROUGH
NORTHWESTERN ADAMS COUNTY. AT HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT...THE
HIGHEST OFFICIAL WIND GUST OF THE MONTH WAS ONLY 47 MPH...ON THE
EARLY MORNING OF THE 4TH. THERE WERE NO CONFIRMED TORNADOES WITHIN
ADAMS COUNTY DURING JUNE 2015.
