...NOVEMBER 2014 NARRATIVE FOR HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT...

THE BIGGEST WEATHER STORY DURING NOV. 2014 WAS TEMPERATURE
EXTREMES...HIGHLIGHTED BY A 10-DAY STRETCH DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE
MONTH THAT WAS THE COLDEST ON RECORD DURING THE FIRST THREE WEEKS OF
NOVEMBER. PRECIPITATION-WISE...IT WAS A RATHER DRY MONTH BUT STILL
FAR FROM BEING A TOP-20 DRIEST.

TEMPERATURE-WISE...IT WAS TRULY A ROLLER-COASTER RIDE: THE OPENING
THIRD OF THE MONTH AVERAGED SEASONABLY MILD...FOLLOWED BY A RECORD-
COLD MIDDLE 10 DAYS...AND THEN A PAIR OF EXTREMELY WARM DAYS TOWARD
THE END OF THE MONTH...ONLY TO BE FOLLOWED BY ONE LAST BLAST OF COLD
ON THE 30TH. IN THE END...THE VERY COLD MID-MONTH STRETCH CARRIED
THE MOST WEIGHT...AS THE OVERALL AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE
(RESULTING FROM AVERAGING BOTH THE HIGHS AND LOWS) WAS 34.4
DEGREES...4.3 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS WAS GOOD FOR THE 10TH-
COLDEST NOVEMBER ON RECORD OUT OF 106 YEARS...AND THE COLDEST SINCE
A 29.7 DEGREE AVERAGE IN 2000. OVER THE COURSE OF THE MONTH...18
DAYS FEATURED A BELOW NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE AND 12 WERE ABOVE
NORMAL. BY FAR AND AWAY THE COLDEST WEEK WAS CENTERED FROM THE 11TH-
17TH...DURING WHICH HIGH TEMPERATURES ONLY REACHED THE 20S ON SIX OF
SEVEN DAYS (INCLUDING ONLY 22 ON THE 17TH) AND LOWS DROPPED BELOW 10
DEGREES ON FIVE OF THE SEVEN DAYS (INCLUDING 1 ON THE 16TH).
EXPANDING OUT TO INCLUDE A FEW DAYS BEYOND THE CORE OF THE COLDEST
WEATHER...THE 10-DAY STRETCH FROM THE 11TH-20TH FEATURED AN AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 19.3 DEGREES...MARKING THE COLDEST 10-DAY STRETCH ON
RECORD DURING THE FIRST THREE WEEKS OF NOVEMBER. BEYOND THE
20TH...TEMPERATURES STABILIZED BACK TO MORE SEASONAL LEVELS THROUGH
THE 27TH...BEFORE A BRIEF-BUT-SUBSTANTIAL BLAST OF LATE-FALL HEAT
ARRIVED ON THE 28TH-29TH...WITH HIGHS OF 74 AND 80
DEGREES...RESPECTIVELY. NOT ONLY DID THESE HIGH TEMPERATURES BREAK
DAILY RECORDS...BUT THIS MARKED THE FIRST TIME ON RECORD THAT
HASTINGS REACHED 80 DURING THE SECOND HALF OF NOVEMBER (HOWEVER THIS
WAS NOT THE LATEST OCCURRENCE OF 80 DEGREES DURING A CALENDAR
YEAR...AS IT ACTUALLY REACHED 80 ON DEC. 23, 1964). IN
ADDITION...THE TWO-DAY AVERAGE HIGH OF 77 DEGREES MARKED THE FIRST
TIME ON RECORD THAT CONSECUTIVE DAYS AVERAGED THIS WARM DURING THE
SECOND HALF OF NOVEMBER (PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 75 DEGREES NOV. 25-26,
1960). NEEDLESS TO SAY...THIS BRIEF WARM STRETCH CAME TO A
SCREECHING HALT ON THE LAST DAY OF THE MONTH AS AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT
PROMOTED A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF ONLY 26 DEGREES ON THE 30TH...A
NOTABLE 54 DEGREE DOWNTURN IN HIGHS FROM THE DAY BEFORE. ON
AVERAGE...THE OVERALL-WARMEST WEEK OF THE MONTH PER AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE WAS THE 2ND-8TH...DURING WHICH FIVE OF THE SEVEN DAYS
CLIMBED TO AT LEAST 63 DEGREES. THE MILDEST LOW TEMPERATURE OF THE
MONTH WAS 42 DEGREES ON THE 2ND.

TURNING TO PRECIPITATION DURING NOVEMBER 2014...THE TOTAL OF ONLY
0.23 INCHES AT HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS 1.06 INCHES BELOW THE
30-YEAR NORMAL OF 1.29 INCHES...AND REPRESENTED LESS THAN ONE-FIFTH
OF NORMAL NOVEMBER PRECIPITATION. EVEN SO...THIS ONLY RANKED AS THE
32ND-DRIEST NOVEMBER ON RECORD OUT OF 120 YEARS...AND ONE ONLY HAS
TO LOOK BACK FIVE YEARS TO 2009 TO FIND A DRIER ONE (0.22 INCHES).
ALMOST HALF OF THE PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH (0.10 INCHES) FELL IN
THE FORM OF 1.4 INCHES OF SNOW ON THE 15TH. A LIGHT DUSTING OF SNOW
ALSO FELL ON THE 10TH...RESULTING IN A MONTHLY TOTAL OF 1.7 INCHES.
ALTHOUGH THIS STILL FELL 0.9 INCHES SHORT OF THE 30-YEAR NORMAL
SNOWFALL FOR THE MONTH...IT WAS ACTUALLY THE HIGHEST NOVEMBER
SNOWFALL TOTAL IN NINE YEARS...SINCE 5.6 INCHES IN 2005.

NO THUNDERSTORMS AFFECTED HASTINGS DURING THE MONTH. HOWEVER...THE
PASSAGE OF SEVERAL COLD FRONTS PROMOTED SIX DAYS WITH NORTHWESTERLY
GUSTS OF AT LEAST 40 MPH...LED BY A 49 MPH PEAK GUSTS ON THE 10TH.

...METEOROLOGICAL-FALL 2014 SEASONAL RECAP COVERING SEP-NOV...

- AVERAGE MEAN TEMPERATURE: 51.2 DEGREES (1.1 BELOW NORMAL)
- FALL PRECIPITATION: 3.77 INCHES (2.07 BELOW NORMAL)

NOVEMBER AS A WHOLE...THE AVERAGE DAILY MEAN TEMPERATURE WAS 51.2
DEGREES...1.1 DEGREES BELOW THE 30-YEAR SEASONAL NORMAL OF 52.3
DEGREES. OF THE THREE FALL MONTHS...OCTOBER WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT
AVERAGED WARMER THAN NORMAL (+2.2)...WHILE NOVEMBER WAS THE COLDEST
VERSUS NORMAL AT -4.3 DEGREES. THE HOTTEST HIGH TEMPERATURE OF FALL
2014 WAS 90 DEGREES ON SEP. 3RD...AND THE COLDEST HIGH WAS 22
DEGREES ON NOV. 17TH. THE COLDEST LOW TEMPERATURE OF THE SEASON WAS
1 DEGREE ON NOV. 16TH AND THE MILDEST LOW WAS 67 DEGREES ON SEP.
9TH. IN TERMS OF AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE...THE OVERALL-WARMEST
WEEK OF FALL 2014 WAS 69.6 DEGREES FROM SEP. 24TH-30TH...AND THE
OVERALL-COLDEST WEEK WAS 16.5 DEGREES FROM NOV. 11TH-17TH. FOR THE
YEAR 2014 AS A WHOLE...ONLY 21 DAYS REACHED OR EXCEEDED 90
DEGREES...WELL-BELOW THE 30-YEAR AVERAGE OF 35 DAYS.

AS FOR FALL PRECIPITATION...THE SEASONAL TOTAL OF 3.77 INCHES AT
HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS 2.07 INCHES BELOW THE 30-YEAR FALL
NORMAL OF 5.84 INCHES. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THIS SEASONAL
PRECIPITATION (3.54 INCHES) FELL AS RAIN DURING SEPTEMBER AND
OCTOBER. THE WETTEST CALENDAR DAY DURING FALL 2014 WAS 1.03 INCHES
ON OCT. 1ST (ASSOCIATED WITH EVENING THUNDERSTORMS).

SNOWFALL-WISE...TWO FAIRLY MINOR NOVEMBER EVENTS RESULTED IN A
SEASONAL TOTAL OF 1.7 INCHES...WHICH WAS 2.1 INCHES BELOW THE 30-YEAR
FALL NORMAL.
