...JULY 2014 NARRATIVE FOR HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT...

NEEDLESS TO SAY...RAINFALL WAS NOT NEARLY AS PLENTIFUL DURING JULY
AS IT WAS DURING JUNE...AS ESPECIALLY THE LATTER TWO-THIRDS OF THE
MONTH BECAME QUITE DRY. ACCORDING TO THE U.S. DROUGHT MONITOR...THE
MAJORITY OF ADAMS COUNTY REGRESSED SLIGHTLY FROM HAVING NO DROUGHT
CLASSIFICATION WHATSOEVER AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH TO HAVING
CATEGORY D0 ABNORMALLY DRY BY MONTH`S END. TEMPERATURE-WISE...IT WAS
A RATHER COOL MONTH OVERALL...INTERRUPTED BY ONLY OCCASIONAL...BRIEF
BURSTS OF HOTTER WEATHER.

FOCUSING ON JULY RAINFALL IN MORE DETAIL...THE MONTHLY TOTAL OF 1.48
INCHES AT HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS 2.26 INCHES BELOW THE 30-
YEAR JULY NORMAL OF 3.74 INCHES. THE MAJORITY OF THIS RAIN (0.94
INCHES) FELL DURING THUNDERSTORMS ON THE 9TH...AND FULLY 98 PERCENT
OF JULY RAIN (1.45 INCHES) FELL DURING THE FIRST 10 DAYS OF THE
MONTH WITH MERELY 0.03 THEREAFTER. DESPITE FINISHING SOLIDLY BELOW
NORMAL FOR THE MONTH...THIS WAS ONLY THE 23RD-DRIEST ON RECORD OUT
OF 120 YEARS DATING BACK TO 1895...AND WAS THE DRIEST SINCE 1.42
INCHES IN 2005.

TEMPERATURE-WISE...THIS WAS THE 12TH-COOLEST JULY ON RECORD OUT OF
108 YEARS DATING TO 1907. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE (RESULTING
FROM AVERAGING BOTH THE HIGHS AND LOWS) WAS 73.6 DEGREES...3.5
DEGREES BELOW THE 30-YEAR NORMAL. DAILY LOW TEMPERATURES CONTRIBUTED
SLIGHTLY MORE WEIGHT TOWARD THIS OVERALL COOLER AVERAGE...AVERAGING
4.0 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. OF THE 31 DAYS DURING THE MONTH...19
FEATURED A BELOW NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE...NINE WERE ABOVE NORMAL
AND THREE DAYS EQUALED THEIR DAILY NORMAL. THE MOST NOTABLE COOL
STRETCH OF THE MONTH WAS SIX DAYS BETWEEN THE 14TH-19TH...DURING
WHICH DAILY HIGHS ONLY RANGED FROM 73-82 DEGREES AND DAILY LOWS FROM
50-60 DEGREES. THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE DURING THIS STRETCH WAS
65.6 DEGREES...RESULTING IN THE 5TH-COOLEST NON-OVERLAPPING SIX DAY
STRETCH ON RECORD FOR THE MONTH OF JULY...AND THE COOLEST SINCE A
65.4 DEGREE AVERAGE FROM JULY 23-28, 2004. THE COOLEST LOW
TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 50 DEGREES ON THE 15TH. IMMEDIATELY
FOLLOWING THIS SIX-DAY COOL STRETCH CAME THE OVERALL-WARMEST WEEK OF
THE MONTH FROM THE 20TH-26TH...DURING WHICH HIGH TEMPERATURES
REACHED AT LEAST 90 DEGREES ON SIX OF SEVEN DAYS...HIGHLIGHTED BY A
HIGH OF 100 ON THE 21ST. THE MILDEST LOW TEMPERATURE OF THE
MONTH...75 DEGREES...ALSO OCCURRED ON THE 21ST. THE MOST EXTREME DAY-
TO-DAY CHANGE IN HIGH TEMPERATURES DURING JULY WAS 12 DEGREES AND
OCCURRED TWICE...FIRST CONSISTING OF A COOL-DOWN FROM 88 DEGREES ON
THE 13TH 76 ON THE 14TH...AND THEN OF A WARM-UP FROM 82 DEGREES ON
THE 19TH TO 94 DEGREES ON THE 20TH.

FALLING IN LINE WITH THE LESSER RAINFALL DURING THE MONTH...THERE
WAS A CORRESPONDING MINIMUM IN SEVERE WEATHER IN THE IMMEDIATE
HASTINGS AREA. HOWEVER...IT WAS A SOMEWHAT CLOSE CALL...AS A NOTABLE
SEVERE STORM WITH DAMAGING WINDS AND COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF HAIL
PRODUCED SIGNIFICANT CROP DAMAGE AS IT DROPPED SOUTHWARD TROUGH THE
WESTERN FRINGES OF ADAMS COUNTY ON THE EVENING OF THE 9TH. THE
HIGHEST WIND GUST OF THE MONTH AT HASTINGS AIRPORT OCCURRED A BIT
LATER THAT SAME EVENING...BUT ONLY REGISTERED 41 MPH FROM THE
NORTHWEST.
