...DROUGHT CONDITIONS LESSEN DUE TO RECENT RAINS...

SYNOPSIS...
BENEFICIAL RAINFALL THAT HAS AMOUNTED TO SEVERAL INCHES OVER THE
PAST TWO WEEKS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MITIGATE WHAT WAS A DEVELOPING
DROUGHT SITUATION ALONG THE GULF SOUTH. THE UNITED STATES DROUGHT
MONITOR HAS REDUCED THE CLASSIFICATION FROM D2 TO D1 - MODERATE
DROUGHT FOR EXTREME SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA BELOW LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN
AND ACROSS THE MISSISSIPPI COASTAL COUNTIES. SURROUNDING PARISHES
AND COUNTIES WERE LOWERED TO D0 - UNUSUALLY DRY CLASSIFICATION. IN
SOUTHWEST MISSISSIPPI AND EAST-CENTRAL LOUISIANA...AREAS
PREVIOUSLY IN SOME CLASSIFICATION WERE REMOVED FROM ANY DROUGHT
STATUS.

SUMMARY OF IMPACTS...
NO DROUGHT IMPACTS ARE EXPECTED IN THE SHORT-TERM.

CLIMATE SUMMARY...
NEW ORLEANS AREA IS ABOUT 1.6 INCHES BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL SINCE
DECEMBER 1 2014...BUT ONLY 0.36 INCHES BELOW NORMAL SINCE JANUARY
1 2015. BATON ROUGE IS ACTUALLY 0.8 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. MCCOMB IS
1.36 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL SINCE JANUARY 1. GULFPORT IS 1.5 INCHES
BELOW NORMAL SINCE JANUARY 1.

PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK...
THE NOAA CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER ONE MONTH PRECIPITATION OUTLOOK
CALLS FOR A GREATER LIKELIHOOD OF ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL IN JANUARY
ACROSS LOUISIANA AND MISSISSIPPI. THE THREE MONTH PRECIPITATION
OUTLOOK SHOWS EQUAL CHANCE OF EITHER ATTAINING ABOVE...BELOW OR
NEAR NORMAL RAINFALL THROUGH MARCH 2015.

THE NOAA CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER ONE MONTH TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK
CALLS FOR EQUAL CHANCES OF EITHER ACHIEVING ABOVE...BELOW OR NEAR
NORMAL. AT THIS TIME...AREA TEMPERATURES ARE BETWEEN 3 AND 6
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL DUE TO ARCTIC AIR MASS INFLUENCES. THE THREE
MONTH TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK SUGGEST A STRONG LIKELIHOOD OF BELOW
NORMAL TEMPERATURES THROUGH MARCH 2015.

HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK...
AT THIS TIME...THE LOWER PEARL RIVER IS IN FLOOD AT BOGALUSA AND
TOWN OF PEARL RIVER. OTHER STREAMS HAVE RECENTLY EXPERIENCED HIGH
FLOWS TO NEAR BANK FULL OR MINOR FLOOD FROM RECENT RAINS...BUT
HAVE SINCE RECEDED TO LOWER LEVELS. A PERIOD OF UNSETTLED WEATHER
INTO WEEK THREE OF JANUARY WILL LIKELY MAINTAIN MODERATE TO HIGH
FLOWS ON MOST AREA RIVERS AND STREAMS.

NEXT ISSUANCE DATE...
THIS PRODUCT WILL BE UPDATED WHENEVER A D2 - SEVERE DROUGHT STATUS
IS ONCE AGAIN INDICATED BY THE DROUGHT MONITOR WITHIN THE WFO NEW
ORLEANS/BATON ROUGE SERVICE AREA.
