DROUGHT INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW ORLEANS LA
1245 PM CST THU DEC 15 2016

...CONTINUED RAINS HAVE BROUGHT ADDITIONAL DROUGHT RELIEF...

SYNOPSIS...
TWO TO EIGHT INCHES OF RAIN HAVE FALLEN ACROSS THE CENTRAL GULF
COAST OVER THE PAST 30 DAYS. THE RECENT WET PATTERN WITH RAINFALL
IN THE AREA EVERY SEVERAL DAYS HAS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED THE
DROUGHT CONDITIONS FROM EARLIER THIS FALL. ALL OF SOUTHEAST
LOUISIANA AND MOST OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI IS NOW CATEGORIZED AS
ABNORMALLY DRY /D0/ ON THE US DROUGHT MONITOR MAP. MODERATE
DROUGHT CONDITIONS /D1/ HAVE RETREATED AND NOW ONLY INCLUDES
JACKSON COUNTY ON THE MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL
IS IN SIGHT...SHOWERS AND STORMS ARE EXPECTED WITH THE PASSAGE OF
A STRONG COLD FRONT LATE THIS WEEKEND. THERE ARE INCREASED
CHANCES FOR CONTINUED ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL OVER THE NEXT TWO
WEEKS AS WELL. AFTER COLD TEMPERATURES EARLY NEXT WEEK...OVERALL
NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED THE NEXT TWO WEEKS.

SUMMARY OF IMPACTS...
THE RECENT RAIN HAS IMPROVED SOIL MOISTURE AND VEGETATION THAT IS
NOT YET DORMANT. WILDFIRE CONCERNS HAVE ALSO BEEN REDUCED.

THERE ARE NO SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI COUNTIES UNDER A BURN BAN. ONLY
TANGIPAHOA PARISH IS UNDER A BURN BAN IN SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA.
CONSULT LOCAL AUTHORITIES FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION.

CLIMATE SUMMARY...
MOST OF THE CENTRAL GULF COAST HAS RECEIVED NEAR NORMAL RAINFALL
OVER THE PAST 30 DAYS FROM THE RECENT WET PATTERN. THOUGH OVER THE
PAST 60 AND 90 DAYS THE REGION HAS STILL ONLY RECEIVED ABOUT 50
PERCENT OF NORMAL RAINFALL. THIS RAINFALL DEFICIT FROM EARLIER IN
THE FALL IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LONG TERM LINGERING ABNORMALLY DRY
CONDITIONS.

PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK...
THE RECENTLY UPDATED ONE MONTH OUTLOOK FOR JANUARY FROM THE NOAA
CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER HAS AN INCREASED CHANCE FOR OVERALL
ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE CENTRAL GULF COAST. THE
PRECIPITATION OUTLOOK INDICATES CHANCES FOR BELOW NORMAL
CONDITIONS DURING JANUARY AS WELL. THE THREE MONTH OUTLOOK FOR
JANUARY THROUGH MARCH HAS BEEN RECENTLY UPDATED AS WELL AND
ALSO INDICATES INCREASED CHANCES FOR ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND
BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION OVERALL. WEAK LA NINA CONDITIONS ARE
EXPECTED THIS WINTER AND THE OUTLOOK IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE
ASSOCIATED CLIMATE PATTERN ALONG THE CENTRAL GULF COAST DURING LA
NINA WINTERS.

THE SEASONAL DROUGHT OUTLOOK THROUGH MARCH FROM THE NOAA CLIMATE
PREDICTION CENTER HAS ALSO BEEN RECENTLY UPDATED. DESPITE THE
IMPROVED DROUGHT CONDITIONS FROM RAIN DURING DECEMBER...THE
SEASONAL OUTLOOK INDICATES THAT DROUGHT IS LIKELY TO REDEVELOP
LATER THIS WINTER.

HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK...
RIVERS IN SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA ARE NOW RUNNING NEAR NORMAL FLOW
FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR.

NEXT ISSUANCE DATE...
THIS IS THE FINAL ISSUANCE OF THIS PRODUCT FOR THE DROUGHT PERIOD
THAT HAS NOW ENDED. THE PRODUCT WILL NEXT BE ISSUED WHEN SEVERE
DROUGHT /D2/ DEVELOPS OR AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.
