...Cold arctic in place may lead to ice jam formation on area
rivers...

Cold arctic air has been in place for several days. With this
prolonged period of below freezing temperatures, rapid ice
development on area streams and rivers could cause ice jams.
Concern areas are along the Henrys Fork of the Snake River near St
Anthony, the Falls River, the Teton River, the Salmon river near
Challis, and the Big Lost river near Darlington. Ice jams may
produce flooding upstream of the jam as well as cause the river to
flow outside of the river banks. Ice jam flooding can create a
rapid rise of water with little if any warning.

Expect Southeast Idaho to warm up by late today and particularly
into Monday. With this warm-up...ice could break up and
potentially cause ice jams as well. The bigger concern would be
ice jams breaking up. If an ice jam suddenly breaks, rapid rises
in the river downstream is also possible.

If you reside in an area that is prone to ice jam or river
flooding please be especially alert through the next week. Please
report any flooding to local law enforcement and have them relay
the report to the National Weather Service.
