FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
937 AM PDT WED AUG 27 2014

...VERY WARM...DRY...UNSTABLE CONDITIONS IN THE OREGON CASCADES
TODAY...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...VERY WARM AND DRY CONDITIONS PERSIST
TODAY...WITH INSTABILITY STILL LINGERING DUE TO A THERMAL TROUGH
NEAR THE CASCADES. GRADUAL COOLDOWN IS EXPECTED THROUGH FRIDAY AS
AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE WEAKENS OVER THE AREA AND THE MARINE LAYER
DEEPENS. AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH WILL PUSH TEMPERATURES BELOW NORMAL
WITH SHOWERS POSSIBLE THIS WEEKEND.

.DISCUSSION...TODAY SHOULD BE VERY SIMILAR TO YESTERDAY AS AN
UPPER LEVEL RIDGE REMAINS DOMINANT OVER THE REGION. A THERMAL
TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE WILL PROMOTE SOME LOW-MID LEVEL INSTABILITY
THIS AFTERNOON AND THUS GOOD VENTILATION FOR THE FIRES BURNING IN
THE WILLAMETTE NF. THIS MORNINGS SALEM SOUNDING TECHNICALLY
INDICATES A HAINES 4...BUT BOTH THE STABILITY AND DRYNESS TERMS
ARE EACH VERY CLOSE TO BEING A 3...WHICH WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A
HAINES 5 OR 6. OVERALL...THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT THE OREGON
CASCADES SHOULD NOT BE DECEIVED BY THE HAINES 4 TODAY...AND THAT
THE BURN ENVIRONMENT WILL LIKELY ACT MORE LIKE A MID-LEVEL HAINES
5 OR LOW END 6 THIS AFTERNOON.

OTHERWISE...OUR UPPER LEVEL RIDGE IS WEAKENING SLIGHTLY...SO
TEMPERATURES MAY BE A DEGREE OR TWO COOLER TODAY. THE WEAKENING
RIDGE IS ALSO ALLOWING THE MARINE LAYER TO DEEPEN ALONG THE
COAST...AND ONSHORE FLOW SHOULD BECOME MORE ROBUST LATE THIS
AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT. A MORE SIGNIFICANT COOLDOWN IS EXPECTED
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AS ONSHORE FLOW INCREASES AND NIGHT/MORNING
LOW CLOUDS EXTEND FURTHER INLAND. AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH WILL
SETTLE OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST FOR BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES
AND SOME SHOWERS THIS WEEKEND. WEAGLE
