Fire Weather Planning Forecast for NW Oregon and SW Washington
National Weather Service Portland OR
235 PM PDT Tue Jul 25 2017

...Moderate Low Level Instability Today...
...Cascades Thunderstorm Threat Mainly Mt. Jefferson Southward
This Evening and Tomorrow...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...Northern California low slowly moves
inland tonight and tomorrow. Cumulus buildups and thunderstorms
possible around Mt Jefferson and Southward. Any storms will be
wet with limited lightning. Unstable low levels across West
Central Oregon regardless. Onshore flow brings increasing humidity
and brief breezy winds near terrain gaps the next couple days.

.DISCUSSION...Upper low over Northern California is very slowly
moving inland. Strong storms will remain south and east of our
area but enough moisture could rotate north and east to bring a
minimal threat of a thunderstorm mainly over the southern reaches
of Willamette National Forest this evening. If so, the storm
would be very slow moving and likely produce a wetting rain under
the core. Additionally, it would likely be rather short-lived with
outflow winds less than 25 mph and probably far weaker. If
nothing else, there is some moderate low level instability with
mixing potential up to about 12,500 feet before hitting a modestly
weak mid level cap.

For Wednesday, have decided to include a threat of thunderstorms
along the Cascades from around Mt. Jefferson and southward. Feel
the primary threat will be over the east slopes but was still
coming up with about a 20% chance of cells developing over the
upper west slopes near the crest. Still feel like any developing
storms will be short lived, generally wet, and not likely to
produce copious amounts of lightning. Thursday will see the
strongest onshore flow and likely be the coolest day of the next
several. No large scale wetting rains are on the horizon as the
region remains under southwest flow aloft and sandwiched between
low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska and the 4-corners high slowly
pushing westward. /JBonk
