Public Information Statement
National Weather Service Boise Idaho
756 AM MDT Fri Mar 17 2017

March 13 through 17 is Flood Safety Awareness Week in Idaho. Each
day during the awareness week the National Weather Service will
feature information about a different flood related topic.

Todays topic: River Flooding

River flooding occurs when river levels rise and overflow their
banks or the edges of their main channel and inundate areas that are
normally dry. River flooding can be caused by heavy rainfall, dam
failures, rapid snowmelt and ice jams. The National Weather Service
issues flood warnings for designated river forecast points where a
flood stage has been established. Be sure to know what areas may be
impacted by river flooding and take care to avoid those locations
when a flood warning is issued. Its important to heed evacuation
orders and road closed signs. Remember, Turn Around Dont Drown.
