...SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA WEATHER SUMMARY FOR JULY 2014...

MEASURABLE RAINFALL WAS REPORTED IN SOME PARTS OF THE FORECAST AREA
ON JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS IN JULY 2014. AS IS TYPICAL FOR JULY IN
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA...WHAT MEASURABLE RAIN DID FALL OCCURRED MOSTLY
IN THE FORM OF SCATTERED SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS...OR
FROM SOME DRIZZLE IN COASTAL AREAS.

TEMPERATURES FOR JULY 2014 GENERALLY AVERAGED 3 TO 5 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL ACROSS MOST OF THE REGION. DAYS WITH EXCESSIVE HEAT WERE NOT
THAT PLENTIFUL...BUT TEMPERATURES WERE ABOVE NORMAL IN MOST AREAS ON
MOST DAYS DURING THE MONTH...LARGELY DUE TO HIGH OVERNIGHT MINIMA.
SEVERAL LOCATIONS NEAR THE IMMEDIATE COAST HAD ONE OF THE WARMEST
IF NOT THE WARMEST JULY ON RECORD. TABLES SHOWING AVERAGE
MONTHLY HIGH TEMPERATURE...AVERAGE MONTHLY LOW TEMPERATURES AND
AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURES FOR SELECTED LOCATIONS AND THEIR
RANKING ARE LISTED BELOW.

DAILY TEMPERATURE RECORDS ARE LISTED AT THE END OF THIS STATEMENT.
SOME OF THE MORE SIGNIFICANT WEATHER EVENTS OF THE MONTH ARE LISTED
IMMEDIATELY BELOW.

DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS ON THE 4TH AND THE 5TH...A FEW
THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED ACROSS THE EASTERN SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS
ADJACENT PORTIONS OF THE ANTELOPE VALLEY. THESE STORMS PRODUCED SOME
LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN.

ON THE 14TH...SPRINKLES AND ISOLATED LIGHT SHOWERS FROM A DYING AREA
OF THUNDERSTORMS IN ARIZONA AFFECTED PORTIONS OF THE REGION. LONG BEACH
AIRPORT REPORTED 0.01 INCHES OF RAIN...SETTING A RECORD FOR THE
DATE. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS A TRACE SET IN BOTH 1974 AND 2011. AT
SANTA BARBARA AIRPORT AND SANTA MARIA AIRPORT...TRACES OF RAIN WERE
REPORTED...TYING RECORDS FOR THE DATE. AT BURBANK AIRPORT...THE
TRACE OF THE RAIN RECORDED SET AT DAILY RECORD...AS NO RAIN HAD EVEN
BEEN RECEIVED ON THAT DATE.

ON THE 15TH...ISOLATED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS AFFECTED THE CUYAMA
VALLEY AND SOUTHEAST PORTIONS OF THE SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY
MOUNTAINS...BUT NO MEASURABLE RAIN WAS OBSERVED IN ANY RAIN GAUGE.

ON THE 19TH...A FEW SPRINKLES FELL ACROSS THE REGION AS SOME MID
LEVEL MOISTURE PUSHED INTO SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA FROM THE
SOUTHEAST. TRACES OF RAIN AT DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES...CAMARILLO
AIRPORT...NWS OXNARD...SANTA BARBARA AIRPORT AND LANCASTER AIRPORT
ALL TIED RECORDS FOR THE DATE.

DURING THE EARLY MORNING OF THE 20TH...A WEAK UPPER LOW DRIFTED INTO
VENTURA COUNTY. THIS BROUGHT A FEW SPRINKLES AND LIGHT SHOWERS TO
THE REGION...WITH LOCAL RAINFALL UP TO A FEW HUNDREDTHS OF AN INCH.
TRACES OF RAIN RECEIVED AT SANDBERG...NWS OXNARD...SANTA BARBARA
AIRPORT AND PASO ROBLES AIRPORT ALL TIED THE DAILY RECORD.

DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS OF THE  20TH...A THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPED
NEAR MOUNT PINOS. RADAR ESTIMATED RAINFALL RATES OVER ONE INCH PER
HOUR WITH THIS STORM.

ON THE 23RD...GUSTY NORTHWEST TO NORTH WINDS AFFECTED THE SANTA YNEZ
MOUNTAINS...AND PORTIONS OF THE SOUTH COAST OF SANTA BARBARA COUNTY
BELOW PASSES AND CANYONS. WIND GUSTS REACHED 55 MPH AT GAVIOTA AND
48 MPH AT LAS FLORES CANYON.

ON THE 27TH...SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED ACROSS
THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY MOUNTAINS DURING THE LATE MORNING
HOURS...BRINGING BRIEFLY HEAVY RAIN TO THE NORTHERN SLOPES OF THE
SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS.

DURING THE EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS ON THE 27TH...A CLUSTER OF
THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED ACROSS THE COASTAL WATERS FROM NEAR CATALINA
ISLAND TO JUST WEST OF PALOS VERDES BETWEEN 1230 PM AND 100 PM PDT.
THESE STORMS BROUGHT HEAVY RAIN TO PORTIONS OF CATALINA ISLAND. ONE
PERSON WAS INJURED BY LIGHTNING NEAR THE CITY OF AVALON.

THESE STORMS DRIFTED NORTHWARD TOWARD THE WESTERN BEACHES OF LOS
ANGELES COUNTY BETWEEN 100 PM AND 300 PM PDT. LIGHTNING STRUCK
VENICE BEACH AT AROUND 220 PM PDT...TRAGICALLY KILLING ONE YOUNG
MAN...AND INJURING 13 OTHERS...ONE CRITICALLY. EIGHT PEOPLE WERE
TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL.

LIGHTNING ALSO STRUCK A POWER LINE POLE IN REDONDO BEACH. THE POLE
LANDED ON A CAR AND STARTED A FIRE. THREE HOMES NEARBY SUSTAINED
ELECTRICAL DAMAGE.

SOME RAINFALL TOTALS ON THE 27TH INCLUDED 0.83 INCHES IN THE CITY OF
AVALON...0.51 INCHES AT AVALON HARBOR...0.14 INCHES AT LOS ANGELES
AIRPORT...0.07 INCHES AT REDONDO BEACH AND 0.03 INCHES AT TORRANCE.
TRACES OF RAIN WERE REPORTED AT DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES... SANTA MONICA
AIRPORT...HAWTHORNE AND SANDBERG. THE DAILY RAINFALL OF 0.14 INCHES
AT LOS ANGELES AIRPORT SET A DAILY RECORD...BREAKING THE RECORD OF A
TRACE SET IN 2006 AND PREVIOUS YEARS. THE TRACE OF RAIN IN DOWNTOWN
LOS ANGELES TIED THE DAILY RECORD SET IN 1955 AND PREVIOUS YEARS.

DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS ON THE 28TH...ANOTHER AREA OF SHOWERS
AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS AFFECTED THE COASTAL WATERS FROM CATALINA
ISLAND TO PALOS VERDES. THESE SHOWERS WEAKENED AS THEY MOVED
ONSHORE...BUT BROUGHT SOME SPRINKLES AND LIGHT AMOUNTS OF MEASURABLE
RAIN TO PORTIONS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY AROUND DAYBREAK. OTHER LIGHT
SHOWERS AFFECTED PORTIONS OF SANTA BARBARA AND SAN LUIS OBISPO
COUNTIES. THE TRACE OF RAINFALL RECORDED AT SANTA MARIA AIRPORT ON
THE 28TH TIED THE RECORD FOR THE DATE SET IN 1993 AND PREVIOUS
YEARS. ALSO...THE TRACE OF RAIN RECORDED ON THE 28TH AT PASO ROBLES
AIRPORT SET A RECORD FOR THE FIRST OBSERVED RAINFALL AT THIS
LOCATION FOR THE DATE SINCE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1948.
