...A RECORD SMASHING MONTH FOR THE KING SALMON AREA...

MAY 2015 WAS A VERY WARM AND WET MONTH FOR THE UPPER ALASKAN PENINSULA. STRONG HIGH
PRESSURE DOMINATED THE INTERIOR AND SOUTHEASTERN REGIONS OF THE STATE WHICH
PROVIDED A MUCH DRYER WEATHER PATTERN FOR THOSE AREAS. SOUTHWESTERN ALASKA WAS
INUNDATED WITH PRECIPITATION DUE TO A CONSTANT SOUTHERLY FLOW CONSISTING MAINLY OF
LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS.

THE AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 56.1 THE DAILY AVERAGE LOW WAS
39.7 DEGREES WHICH SET A NEW RECORD FOR THE HIGHEST MONTHLY MINIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR
THE MONTH OF MAY.  THE DAILY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 47.9 WHICH IS 3.7 DEGREES
HIGHER THAN NORMAL. THE HIGHEST DAILY TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS RECORDED ON THE
30TH WITH A WONDERFUL 73 DEGREES. THE LOW OF 31 DEGREES WAS RECORDED ON THE 2ND.

IT WAS THE WETTEST MAY ON RECORD FOR THE KING SALMON AREA. A TOTAL AMOUNT OF 3.32
INCHES OF RAIN WAS MEASURED AT THE KING SALMON NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE. THE
AVERAGE MAY PRECIPITATION IS A MERE 1.25 INCHES. THE PREVIOUS RECORD FOR KING
SALMON OCCURRED WAY BACK IN 1919 WITH A TOTAL AMOUNT OF 1.60 INCHES. THE NEW RECORD
BEATS THE PREVIOUS RECORD BY 1.72 INCHES. 0.61 INCHES OF RAIN FELL ON THE 3RD FOR
THE HIGHEST DAILY AMOUNT MEASURED. THIS ALSO SET A NEW RECORD FOR THAT DATE WHICH
REPLACES THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 0.58 INCHES SET IN 1919. 0.55 INCHES OF RAIN FELL
ON THE 14TH TO REPLACE THE OLD RECORD OF 0.46 INCHES THAT FELL IN 1989. A TRACE OR
MORE WAS MEASURED ON 22 DAYS OF THE MONTH.  NO SNOW FELL AT KING SALMON DURING THE
MONTH OF MAY.

WITH THE RAIN CAME THE WIND...LOTS OF WIND. THE MONTHLY AVERAGE WIND SPEED WAS 9.6
MPH. A SUSTAINED WIND SPEED OF 37 MPH WAS RECORDED ON THE 13TH. THE HIGHEST WIND
GUST FOR THE MONTH OCCURRED ON THE 16TH WITH A SPEED OF 44 MPH.
