HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL DISCUSSION
NWS ALASKA PACIFIC RIVER FORECAST CENTER ANCHORAGE AK
300 PM AKDT FRI JAN 23 2015

...FLOOD POTENTIAL...

FLOOD POTENTIAL IS LOW FOR THE STATE OF ALASKA. PERIODS OF RAIN IN
SOUTHEAST ALASKA TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY MAY CAUSE RAPID IN-BANK
RISES ON AFFECTED SMALL STREAMS.

...HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL DISCUSSION...

MULTIPLE SYSTEMS MOVED INTO THE GULF OVER THE PAST WEEK... KEEPING
THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION OVER SOUTHEAST AND THE GULF COASTAL
REGION. RAIN WAS HEAVY OVER MUCH OF SOUTHEAST ALASKA ON TUESDAY AND
WEDNESDAY... ESPECIALLY AT KETCHIKAN. MORE RAIN IS EXPECTED IN
SOUTHEAST ALASKA THROUGH SATURDAY. A COLD TROUGH MOVING SOUTH AND
EAST OUT OF THE NORTHWEST MAINLAND IS BRINGING AREAS OF SNOW TO
SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA NORTHWARD INTO THE INTERIOR. AS THIS TROUGH
MOVES EAST OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS TEMPERATURES WILL COOL ACROSS MUCH
OF THE STATE.

...SNOW DEPTH...

OVER THE PAST WEEK SNOW DEPTHS HAVE GENERALLY INCREASED SLIGHTLY
OVER MOST OF THE MAINLAND... WHILE SNOW DEPTHS HAVE DECREASED
AROUND THE JUNEAU AREA.

...ICE THICKNESS...

ICE THICKNESS MEASURED AT THE BEGINNING OF JANUARY INCLUDED: 14 TO
29 INCHES AROUND THE MIDDLE TANANA BASIN... 11 TO 15 INCHES AROUND
THE ANCHORAGE AREA... 31 INCHES AT BETTLES... AND 32 INCHES AT
COLVILLE VILLAGE.

...LONG RANGE...

THE 6 TO 10 DAY TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK HAS INCREASED CHANCES OF ABOVE
NORMAL TEMPERATURES OVER THE AKPEN... KODIAK ISLAND... KENAI
PENINSULA... NORTH GULF COASTAL REGION... AND SOUTHEAST ALASKA.

THE 6 TO 10 DAY PRECIPITATION OUTLOOK HAS INCREASED CHANCES FOR
BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION OVER MOST OF THE MAINLAND... AND
INCREASED CHANCES FOR ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION OVER SOUTHEAST
ALASKA AND A PORTION OF THE SOUTHEAST MAINLAND.

PLEASE REFER TO THE CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER HOME PAGE FOR FURTHER
INFORMATION.
