Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello ID
324 AM MDT Wed Apr 10 2024

.SHORT TERM...Today and Thursday
A ridge of high pressure will continue to amplify over the region
for the next few days. What does that mean for sensible weather
across the region? Well, in short, pleasant! Expecting mostly clear
skies today, light winds and seasonal temperatures for mid April.
This translates to highs ranging from the upper 40s (mountains) to
upper 50s in the lower valleys. No precipiation is expected. As we
move into Thursday, temps will be some 5-10 degrees warmer than
Wednesday as we continue warming under the ridge. Overnight Thu and
into Fri AM, some shallow moisture may move atop the ridge into the
central mountains sparking an isolated shower chance but these would
likely be very isolated in nature. McKaughan

.LONG TERM...Fri through Tue
There is a pattern change as a wetter period develops with a low
at the coast that then moves inland. The clusters for this
extended period continue to have a variety of solutions with
significant differences for southern Idaho. The WPC precipitation
came out with very little developing for this period, with even
the operational GFS having too much precipitation compared to the
NBM. This coastal low drops southward first along the coast, then
moves inland to the south of the forecast area, so the brunt of
the weather associated with the low is even farther south. The
temperatures start cooling with cloud cover on Sat. The cooling
continues for the high as the low finally slides to the east of
Idaho`s longitude. Highs appear to lower from the low 70s on Fri
to around the 50 degree mark by Tue afternoon as the low passes
east. This may bring some windy conditions on that day, but there
just isn`t much precipitation. Messick

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions will prevail through the period with light winds and
mostly clear skies. McKaughan

.HYDROLOGY...
The Portneuf River in Pocatello continues below minor flood stage
this morning but is expected to rise throughout the week as
temperatures warm and more mid/high level snowmelt contributes to
water level rises on the river. Flood Warnings will continue
accordingly over the days ahead. Elsewhere across SE Idaho, we are
not currently expecting any flooding along our larger rivers and
creeks over the next week or so, although our flood season is still
quite young. REMEMBER... despite recent warm air temps...the water
in all of our rivers, creeks, and streams largely originates from
melting mountain snow and is dangerously cold this time of year. Be
especially careful to keep children away from the water. McKaughan
