...BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND PRECIPITATION ACROSS SOUTHEAST
ALASKA IN MARCH...

March and the climatological started out with a bang and a major
snow event at the beginning of the month. More than 10 inches of
snow fell at the Juneau Airport on March 1st. In Petersburg, 9
inches fell on the first and another 4 inches fell on the second. In
Haines, over 8 inches fell on the first of the month and a whopping
20.6 inches fell on the second day of the month. In Gustavus, 6.3
inches fell on the first and 8.6 inches fell on the second. More
snow fell on the 15th and 16th, with Haines receiving another 15.5
inches and lesser amounts elsewhere. Very little snow fell across
Southeast Alaska after the middle of the month with monthly snow
totals at or slightly above normal. The exception, of course, was
Haines, which recorded over 21 inches above normal for the month.

While snowfall was at or above normal for the month, precipitation
turned out to be below normal across the Panhandle and Northeast
Gulf Coast. Average temperatures were also below normal across the
region, ranging from 1 to 3.5 degrees below normal, and this
accounted for above normal snowfall in spite of below normal precip.
Daily highs and lows were not dramatically below normal on any given
day, but one record low temperature was set when the temperature
fell to +7 degrees on the 13th of the month in Juneau. Yet, this was
not the coldest night of the month; the temperature fell to +5
degrees at the Juneau airport and -1 at the forecast office in the
Mendenhall Valley on March 6th. Yakutat recorded a very cold +1
degree overnight low on the 5th of March. Other notable lows
included Haines at -2 on the night of the 6th, Gustavus at -4 on the
1st, and Haines Customs at -16 on the 13th. No record highs were set
during the month.
