...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1939, a blizzard struck west central Kansas. Snow was light
during the early morning in Wichita County, Kansas, but it increased
during the day. Visibilities were initially good enough to allow
students and teachers to reach school, but many recalled the tragic
blizzard of 1931 and decided not to attend. One teacher braved the
elements and reached her school, the Novak School in Scott County.
By the mid morning, however, snow had increased. By the afternoon,
roads were impassable. The teacher spent the night at the school
after bringing in an extra supply of coal to keep the school house
warm. She weathered the night at the school and returned home the
next day.
