FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR WESTERN AND CENTRAL WYOMING
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RIVERTON WY

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 9 PM MDT
THIS EVENING...

.DISCUSSION...

...YELLOWSTONE NP AND TETON DISPATCH AREAS (INCLUDES FIRE WEATHER
ZONES 140...414...415...AND 416)...

SOUTHWEST FLOW WILL INCREASE TODAY AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING WEATHER
SYSTEM. WIDESPREAD WIND GUSTS AROUND 30 MPH ARE EXPECTED IN THE
AFTERNOON BUT RELATIVE HUMIDITIES WILL BE IN THE 20S TO NEAR 30 IN
YELLOWSTONE AS MID LEVEL MOISTURE CRUISES IN. THERE COULD BE A FEW
MIXED WET AND DRY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS IN THE AFTERNOON ALSO
HELPING TO KEEP THE HUMIDITY FROM DIPPING TO CRITICAL LEVELS. A
FEW AREAS IN 416 COULD DROP INTO THE LOW TEENS BUT THE OVERLAP OF
STRONG WIND AND LOW HUMIDITY IS EXPECTED TO BE VERY LOCALIZED AND
SHORT LIVED. WIND AND THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY WILL BE MORE
WIDESPREAD ON SUNDAY AS A COLD FRONT MOVES IN EARLY AND KEEPS
TEMPERATURES DOWN AND HUMIDITY UP.

...RAWLINS DISPATCH AREA (INCLUDES FIRE WEATHER ZONES 277...278...
AND 279)...

...RED FLAG WARNING FOR ZONES 277 AND 279 TODAY...

A CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER PATTERN IS SETTING UP THIS WEEKEND AS DRY
...SWIFT AND UNSTABLE SOUTHWEST FLOW INCREASES AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING
COLD FRONT. EXPECT WINDS TO DEVELOP FIRST ACROSS THE WESTERN
PORTION OF THE ZONE EARLY IN THE AFTERNOON...EVENTUALLY SPREADING
25 TO 30 MPH SOUTHWEST WIND GUSTS TO MUCH OF THE DISPATCH AREA
AFTER PEAK HEATING. IN ADDITION...A HAINES INDEX OF 6 IS EXPECTED
ALONG WITH MINIMUM RELATIVE HUMIDITIES IN THE LOW TO MID TEENS
DURING THE AFTERNOON. ON SUNDAY...A COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH
RATHER EARLY...DROPPING TEMPERATURES AND INCREASING RELATIVE
HUMIDITY TO ABOVE CRITICAL LEVELS. WINDS HOWEVER WILL BE STRONGER
ON SUNDAY AND THERE WILL BE A CHANCE FOR MIXED WET AND DRY
THUNDERSTORMS IN THE LATE AFTERNOON...WITH SOME NATURAL FIRE
STARTS NOT OUT OF THE REALM OF POSSIBILITY. SO WHILE THERE IS NOT
A RED FLAG WARNING ON SUNDAY...IT COULD STILL BE A DIFFICULT DAY
WITH WINDS REMAINING ELEVATED AND NATURAL FIRE STARTS MORE
PROBABLE.

...CODY DISPATCH AREA (INCLUDES FIRE WEATHER ZONES 275...276...
282...283...285...286...287...288...AND 289)...

...RED FLAG WARNING FOR NORTHERN ZONES TODAY...FOR ZONE 283 THROUGH SUNDAY...

A CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER PATTERN IS SETTING UP THIS WEEKEND AS
DRY...SWIFT AND UNSTABLE SOUTHWEST FLOW INCREASES AHEAD OF AN
APPROACHING COLD FRONT. EXPECT WINDS TO DEVELOP FIRST ACROSS
EASTERN ZONES AND IN MORE EXPOSED AREAS EARLY IN THE
AFTERNOON...EVENTUALLY SPREADING 25 TO 30 MPH SOUTHWEST WIND GUSTS
DEEPER INTO THE BASINS AFTER PEAK HEATING. IN ADDITION...A HAINES
INDEX OF 6 IS EXPECTED ALONG WITH MINIMUM RELATIVE HUMIDITIES IN
THE SINGLE DIGITS TO LOW TEENS DURING THE AFTERNOON. ON SUNDAY...A
COLD FRONT WILL BE KNOCKING AT THE DOOR FROM THE NORTH. ALSO ON
SUNDAY...THERE WILL BE A BETTER CHANCE OF A THUNDERSTORM WITH
MIXED WET AND DRY STORMS POSSIBLE...BECOMING DRIER AS YOU HEAD
SOUTH AND EAST AWAY FROM THE ABSAROKAS WITH AN LAL OF 6 POSSIBLE.
EXTENDED THE WARNING INTO SUNDAY FOR ZONES 283 AS THIS ZONE WILL
BE IN THE DRIER AND MORE UNSTABLE AIR. WIND CRITERIA WILL EASILY
BE MET ACROSS THE BOARD ON SUNDAY.

...CASPER DISPATCH AREA (INCLUDES FIRE WEATHER ZONES 280...281...
285...289...AND 300)...

...RED FLAG WARNING FOR ALL ZONES TOMORROW...EXTENDING INTO SUNDAY
FOR ZONES 280 289 AND 300...

A CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER PATTERN IS SETTING UP THIS WEEKEND AS
DRY...SWIFT AND UNSTABLE SOUTHWEST FLOW INCREASES AHEAD OF AN
APPROACHING COLD FRONT. EXPECT WINDS TO DEVELOP LATE IN THE
MORNING. BY EARLY AFTERNOON...SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 25
TO 30 MPH AND WILL COUPLE WITH A RELATIVE HUMIDITY RANGING FROM
THE UPPER SINGLE DIGITS TO THE LOW TO MID TEENS. WIND CRITERIA
WILL BE MORE EASILY MET AND WILL BE MORE WIDESPREAD ON SUNDAY. IN
ADDITION...A HAINES INDEX OF 6 IS EXPECTED. ON SUNDAY...A COLD
FRONT WILL BE KNOCKING AT THE DOOR FROM THE NORTH. ALSO ON
SUNDAY...THERE WILL BE A BETTER CHANCE OF A THUNDERSTORM WITH
MIXED WET AND DRY STORMS POSSIBLE...BECOMING DRIER AS YOU HEAD
SOUTH AND EAST AWAY FROM THE MONTANA BORDER WITH AN LAL OF 6
POSSIBLE IF A PLUME OF MID LEVEL MOISTURE HEADING UP FROM THE
SOUTH CAN MAKE IT INTO THE REGION. DRY LIGHTNING WILL BE MOST
LIKELY ON THE PERIPHERY OF ANY THUNDERSTORMS.

...THUNDERSTORMS IMPLY STRONG GUSTY AND ERRATIC WINDS...
...HAINES INDEX IS HIGH LEVEL HAINES BOTH DAY AND NIGHT...
