...COOL AND WET OCTOBER FOR BETHEL...

OVERALL...OCTOBER 2014 WAS GENERALLY A COOLER AND WETTER MONTH THAN
NORMAL FOR BETHEL. FOR MOST OF THE MONTH AN ABNORMALLY STRONG AREA OF
HIGH PRESSURE CENTERED OVER THE WEST-CENTRAL BERING SEA COMBINED WITH
AN EQUALLY ABNORMAL STRONG AREA OF LOW PRESSURE OVER THE NORTHEAST
PACIFIC OCEAN KEPT THE KUSKOKWIM DELTA IN MOSTLY NORTHERLY FLOW...
ALLOWING COOLER CONDITIONS TO PREVAIL.

WITH RESPECT TO TEMPERATURE...WHILE NOT IN THE TOP 25 COLDEST MONTHS...
BETHEL WAS ABNORMALLY COOL WITH THE AVERAGE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE COMING
IN AS THE 26TH COOLEST ON RECORD. THE AVERAGE MINIMUM AND THE AVERAGE
MEAN TEMPERATURES BOTH CAME IN AS THE 27TH COOLEST ON RECORD. THERE
WERE NO TEMPERATURE RECORDS SET IN OCTOBER.

LOOKING JUST AT PRECIPITATION TOTALS...OCTOBER 2014 COMES IN SLIGHTLY
ABOVE NORMAL AS THE 20TH WETTEST OCTOBER ON RECORD WITH REGARDS TO LIQUID
PRECIPITATION AND THE 19TH SNOWIEST OCTOBER ON RECORD. HOWEVER...A CLOSER
LOOK AT THE DATA SHOWS THAT OVER HALF OF THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF PRECIPITATION
FOR THE MONTH FELL IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD ON THE 27TH. THIS TOTAL OF 1.16
INCHES SET A NEW DAILY RECORD AS WELL AS BEING THE 4TH WETTEST DAY ON
RECORD IN OCTOBER. THIS RAINFALL WAS DUE TO A STRONG LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM
NEAR THE BERING STRAIT THAT BROUGHT DEEP WARM MOISTURE TO THE REGION.
THE STRONG AND OFTEN DRY NORTHERLY FLOW ACTUALLY PRODUCED DRIER THAN
NORMAL CONDITIONS IN THE ATMOSPHERE WHICH LEAD TO GENERALLY DRY...LOW
WATER EQUIVALENT SNOWFALL EVENTS FOR THE FIRST 20 DAYS OF THE MONTH.
