...COLDEST MONTH ON RECORD...

THE COLDEST CALENDAR MONTH ON RECORD WAS ESTABLISHED THIS FEBRUARY
2015 AS A CONSTANT SIEGE OF VERY COLD AIRMASSES BROUGHT DAY AFTER
DAY OF WELL BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES. ALL BUT TWO DAYS THIS MONTH
FINISHED BELOW NORMAL...AND TEN OF THESE DAYS FINISHED 20F OR MORE
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS FEBRUARY ALSO WAS THE THIRD SNOWIEST
FEBRUARY ON RECORD.

THE MONTH BEGAN WITH A SIGNIFICANT SNOWSTORM THAT DROPPED A FOOT TO
A FOOT AND A HALF OF SNOW ACROSS WESTERN NEW YORK. THROUGH THE FIRST
WEEK TEMPERATURES DID MANAGE TO REACH THE FREEZING MARK TWICE...ON
BOTH THE 4TH AND THE 7TH. THEREAFTER A STRONG RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE
WAS ANCHORED OVER THE WESTERN THIRD OF NORTH AMERICAN...WHILE A DEEP
TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE WAS CARVED OVER THE EASTERN TWO THIRDS OF
NORTH AMERICA. THIS PERSISTENT FLOW IN THE JET STREAM ALLOWED FOR
ARCTIC AIR TO FLOW SOUTHWARD ACROSS CANADA AND TOWARDS THE GREAT
LAKES REGION. THIS COLD AIRMASS WOULD THEN LINGER THROUGH THE END OF
THE MONTH OVER EASTERN CANADA AND THE EASTERN UNITED STATES. THE
EXTREMELY COLD AIR SET SEVERAL DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE RECORDS THROUGH
THE LAST THREE WEEKS OF THE MONTH. THE FINAL TWO AND A HALF WEEKS OF
THE MONTH AVERAGED 20F DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE
SET THIS MONTH WAS -10F DEGREES WHICH OCCURRED UNDER CLEARING SKIES
AND COLD NORTHWEST FLOW. THIS READING HAPPENED BOTH JUST BEFORE AND
AFTER MIDNIGHT OF THE 15TH-16TH. WITHIN THE NORTHWEST FLOW THIS
MONTH SEVERAL CLIPPER SYSTEMS PASSED THROUGH...WITH AIR TEMPERATURES
MODERATING SLIGHTLY FROM THEIR FRIGID VALUES AND LIGHT SNOWS
FALLING. BEHIND EACH CLIPPER LOW A FRESH ARCTIC AIRMASS REPLENISHED
THE COLD AIR ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES REGION SENDING AIR TEMPERATURES
AGAIN TO WELL BELOW NORMAL VALUES.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE THIS FEBRUARY WAS 10.9F DEGREES. THIS SET
FEBRUARY AS NOT ONLY THE COLDEST OF ANY FEBRUARY MONTHS...BUT ALSO
THE COLDEST OF ANY MONTH IN BUFFALO`S HISTORY. THE PREVIOUS COLDEST
MONTH WAS FEBRUARY 1934 WHICH WAS 11.6F DEGREES. THE MONTH FINISHED
MORE THAN 15 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL WHILE BREAKING SEVERAL RECORD LOW
TEMPERATURES THAT HAD STOOD FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY. THERE WERE
THREE RECORD LOWS SET THIS MONTH...ON THE 16TH (-10F), 19TH (-6F)AND
23RD (-7F). THERE WERE ALSO TWO RECORD LOW MAXIMUMS SET THIS
MONTH...ON THE 15TH (2F) AND 20TH (1F). FOR JUST THE SECOND TIME IN
FEBRUARY THE ENTIRE MONTH FAILED TO REGISTER AN ABOVE FREEZING
TEMPERATURE...COMPARING WITH FEBRUARY 1978 THAT ALSO SET THIS MARK.
THERE WERE 10 DAYS THIS MONTH THAT FELL BELOW ZERO WHICH IS THE
GREATEST NUMBER OF DAYS IN FEBRUARY SINCE 1934 WHICH FEATURED 11 DAYS
THAT FELL BELOW ZERO.

SNOWFALL THIS MONTH FINISHED AT 46.2 INCHES...WHICH IS OVER TWO FEET
ABOVE NORMAL. THIS SNOW AMOUNT RANKS THIS FEBRUARY AS THE 3RD
SNOWIEST ON RECORD. THE 21 DAYS OF MEASURABLE SNOWFALL FELL JUST
SHORT OF THE RECORD OF 23 DAYS WHICH WAS SET IN YEARS 1901, 1962 AND
1967. THE GREATEST SNOWFALL OCCURRED ON THE 1ST AND 2ND OF THE MONTH
TOTALING JUST OVER A FOOT OF SNOW FOR THE TWO DAYS. THIS SYSTEM ALSO
ESTABLISHED A DAILY RECORD SNOWFALL ON THE 2ND WITH 8.2 INCHES OF
SNOW FALLING. TWO OTHER DAYS HAD SNOWSTORMS OF NOTE...THE 4TH-5TH
WITH 7.7 INCHES OF SNOW AND THE 14TH WITH NEARLY 7 INCHES OF SNOW.
BOTH SYSTEMS FEATURED STRONG ARCTIC FRONTS THAT PRODUCED SNOW
SQUALLS THAT BROUGHT A BURST OF HEAVY SNOW WHICH ALONG WITH BLOWING
SNOW CREATED POOR DRIVING CONDITIONS AND SLOWED TRAVEL ACROSS AREA
ROADS. ALL SNOW THIS MONTH WAS SYNOPTICALLY DRIVEN. ALL MEASURABLE
PRECIPITATION THAT FELL THIS MONTH WAS SNOW...AND THE LIQUID
EQUIVALENT OF THE SNOW THIS MONTH WAS NEAR NORMAL. THERE WERE
SEVERAL CASES OF FREEZING DRIZZLE...WITH THE MOST PRONOUNCED
OCCURRING ON THE 4TH OF THE MONTH.

THE SNOW THAT FELL TOWARDS THE END OF JANUARY AND THROUGH FEBRUARY
ACCUMULATED INTO A VERY DEEP SNOWPACK THAT REMAINED THROUGH THE
MONTH OF FEBRUARY. THE TYPICAL MID WINTER THAWS NEVER OCCURRED THIS
WINTER SEASON WHICH ALLOWED FOR THE SNOW DEPTH TO BE THE GREATEST IN
13 YEARS. THE SNOW DEPTH PEAKED AT 26 INCHES ON THE 15TH...GREATEST
SNOW DEPTH SINCE DEC-JAN OF 2001-02 WHICH HAD A SNOWPACK THAT PEAKED
AT 44 INCHES IN LATE DECEMBER AND REMAINED AT 27 INCHES INTO
JANUARY.

THERE WERE SEVERAL DAYS OF GUSTY WINDS THAT BROUGHT BLOWING AND
DRIFTING OF SNOW. THESE WINDS ALSO CREATED DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS
OVER THE LAST THREE WEEKS OF THE MONTH. LAKE ERIE REMAINED DEEPLY
ICE COVERED THROUGH THE MONTH.

IN ALL A HISTORIC COLD AND SNOWY FEBRUARY THAT WILL SERVE AS A NEW
BENCHMARK FOR COLDNESS.

HERE ARE THE WINTER (DJF) STATS FOR BUFFALO. (NORMAL IN PARENTHESIS)

TEMPERATURE...21.6F (27.1F) **10TH COLDEST

PRECIPITATION...7.14" (9.56") **27TH DRIEST
