DESPITE AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF COLDER TEMPERATURES LAST MONTH,
DECEMBER 2017 CONTINUED THE TREND OF WARMER THAN AVERAGE MONTHS FOR
KEY WEST. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN DECEMBER WAS 72.7 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, 1.3 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE WARMEST DECEMBER ON RECORD
FOR KEY WEST AVERAGED 77.6 DEGREES IN 2015. THE COLDEST DECEMBER ON
RECORD AVERAGED 63.1 DEGREES IN 2010.

FOLLOWING IN NOVEMBER`S FOOTSTEPS, DECEMBER ENDED ON THE DRIER-THAN-
NORMAL SIDE FOR KEY WEST AS WELL. THE TOTAL RAINFALL WAS 1.28
INCHES, OR 0.94 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THE WETTEST DECEMBER ON RECORD
FOR KEY WEST WAS 1986 WHEN 11.18 INCHES WAS RECORDED. THE DRIEST
DECEMBER ON RECORD WAS 2005, WHEN ONLY 0.05 INCHES WAS RECORDED.

RAINFALL AND TEMPERATURE RECORDS IN KEY WEST DATE BACK TO 1871 AND
1872, RESPECTIVELY. COMPLETE YEARLY RECORDS FOR TEMPERATURE DATA
DATE BACK TO 1873.

DECEMBER 2017 DOES STAND OUT IN ONE RESPECT, NO RECORDS WERE SET
THROUGHOUT THE MONTH. THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND MONTH IN 2017 TO NOT
SET ANY RECORDS. THE LONE OTHER MONTH GAINING THIS DISTINCTION WAS
FEBRUARY.

LOOKING BACK AT 2017, KEY WEST ENDED THE YEAR WITH AN AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 79.4 DEGREES, 1.6 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS TIES
1991 AND 1880 FOR THE THIRD WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD FOR THE KEY WEST
AREA. THE WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD WAS 2015 WITH AN AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 79.9 DEGREES. RAINFALL FOR THE YEAR TOTALED 38.12
INCHES, JUST SHY OF THE NORMAL 39.83 INCHES FOR THE YEAR. THIS WAS
THE CLOSEST KEY WEST HAS BEEN TO NORMAL RAINFALL VALUES SINCE 2010.
