Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Southwestern California
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
915 AM PDT Wed Aug 23 2017

...Elevated fire weather conditions through early this evening for
the highway 14 corridor into the Antelope Valley due to low humidities
and gusty winds...

.DISCUSSION...A weak low pressure system was just west of Pt
Conception this morning and will slowly slide across southwest
California through Friday. A rather deep marine layer between
2000-3000 feet will persist with morning low clouds and fog for
coastal and valley districts. Onshore pressure gradients peak near 8
mb today which will lead to gusty southwest winds up to 40 mph across
the mountains, the highway 14 corridor and the adjacent Antelope
Valley foothills this afternoon and early evening. Humidities will
drop into the teens and bring a few hours of critical fire weather
conditions to this region. Also, a few cumulus buildups are expected
over the eastern San Gabriels today due to slight instability.

Temperatures will creep a little higher for interior areas through
the week. Weak Sundowners are possible for the western end of the
Santa Barbara coastal canyons starting Thursday evening and
for the following two evenings.

An extended heat wave is expected to develop this weekend and
persist through most of next week as a large high pressure system
builds over the desert Southwest. Temperatures should start to crack
the century mark by Friday afternoon in the Antelope Valley, then
spread into the valleys for the weekend. The marine layer will shrink
and morning clouds will mainly be confined to the beaches. This will
be a critical fire weather time period as the heat builds and
humidities fall into the 10-18 percent range along with very dry fuel
moistures.
