Public Information Statement
National Weather Service San Diego Ca
1000 AM PST Mon Mar 6 2017

...Impact Based Special Marine Warnings (SMW) and Marine
Weather Statements (MWS) Starting April 4, 2017...

Effective Tuesday April 4, 2017, Special Marine Warnings
(SMWs) issued by the National Weather Service in San Diego
(in addition to all other coastal NWS Weather Forecast
Offices in the Continental United States) will include
WATERSPOUT, HAIL, and/or WIND tags at the bottom of the
product, as well as additional descriptive Hazard, Source,
and Impact sections. This change also applies to Marine
Weather Statements (MWSs) that follow-up SMWs.

The waterspout, hail and wind tags are used to describe
the expected magnitude of each threat. The hazard, source
and impact sections are added to provide extra information
on the expected weather threats, the source that prompted
the warning, and the expected impacts to mariners
respectively.

The tag line for each threat is at the bottom of the
product. The hail and wind tags are included regardless of
the magnitude, but if a waterspout is not possible or has
not been observed, then the waterspout tag is omitted.

Here is an example of the new format:

* At 1234 PM PDT, a severe thunderstorm producing
waterspouts was located 34 nm east of North San Clemente
Island, or 36 nm west of La Jolla, moving northeast at
  20 knots.

HAZARD...Waterspouts, wind gusts 34 knots or greater, and
           large hail.

  SOURCE...Mariner.

IMPACT...Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create
locally hazardous seas. Small craft could be
damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly
higher waves. Large hail could result in
           structural damage.

* The severe thunderstorm will remain over mainly open
waters.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Move to safe harbor until hazardous weather passes.
