PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SHREVEPORT LA
621 PM CDT TUE MAR 18 2014

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE (NWS) TRADITIONALLY DECLARES THE THIRD
WEEK OF MARCH AS FLOOD SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK. THIS YEAR THE NWS
CELEBRATES FLOOD SAFETY AWARENESS FOR THE PERIOD OF MARCH 16TH
THROUGH MARCH 22ND. EACH WEEKDAY DURING THIS AWARENESS WEEK...THE
NWS DISCUSSES DIFFERENT FLOOD TOPICS.

TODAY`S TOPIC...TURN AROUND DON`T DROWN

TURN AROUND DON`T DROWN...OR TADD FOR SHORT...IS THE NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE CAMPAIGN TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT THE HAZARDS OF
DRIVING A VEHICLE OR WALKING THROUGH FLOOD WATERS.

2014 IS THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TADD PROGRAM. HUNDREDS OF
SIGNS WITH THE MESSAGE OF TURN AROUND DON`T DROWN HAVE BEEN POSTED
AT LOW WATER CROSSINGS DURING THE PAST DECADE. THE PHRASE TURN
AROUND DON`T DROWN HAS BECOME A BIT OF A CATCHPHRASE IN THE NEWS
MEDIA...CLASSROOM...AND EVEN IN PUBLIC. HOWEVER...WE NEED TO PUT
OUR WORDS INTO PRACTICE.

FLOODING IS THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF WEATHER RELATED FATALITIES
IN THE UNITED STATES PER YEAR. ON AVERAGE...FLOODING CLAIMS THE
LIVES OF EIGHTY NINE PEOPLE EACH YEAR. MOST DEATHS OCCUR IN
VEHICLES WHEN PEOPLE ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THROUGH FLOODED ROADWAYS.
MANY PEDESTRIANS ALSO LOSE THEIR LIVES WALKING INTO FLOODWATERS.
THESE DEATHS OCCUR BECAUSE PEOPLE UNDERESTIMATE THE FORCE AND POWER
OF WATER...ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS MOVING. THE GOOD NEWS REMAINS THAT
MOST FLOODING DEATHS CAN BE PREVENTED WITH THE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE.

JUST SIX INCHES OF SWIFT MOVING WATER CAN KNOCK DOWN AN ADULT. ONLY
EIGHTEEN INCHES OF FLOWING WATER CAN SWEEP AWAY MOST VEHICLES. IT
IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE EXACT DEPTH OF WATER COVERING
A ROADWAY OR THE CONDITION OF A ROAD BELOW THE WATER. NEVER WALK OR
DRIVE THROUGH FLOOD WATERS. ANY TIME YOU WALK OR DRIVE TO A FLOODED
ROAD...WALKWAY...OR PATH...FOLLOW THIS SIMPLE RULE: TURN AROUND
DON`T DROWN.
