Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Honolulu HI
950 AM HST Tue Apr 23 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Moderate to breezy trade wind conditions will continue through
the week, with clouds and showers favoring windward and mauka
areas. Trades look to ease slightly this weekend as high pressure
weakens to the north.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Overnight showers continue to wane this morning as the residual
moisture from last night moves east of the state. Guidance shows
another band of moisture moving through tonight which will bring
another uptick in windward and makua showers, with some showers
spilling over into leeward areas of the smaller islands. Shower
coverage should trend down later this week as drier air moves in.

Expect moderate to breezy northeast to east trade winds to
continue through the week as high pressure remains to the
northeast. Trades look to ease slightly this weekend as high
pressure weakens in response to a developing low far northwest of
the state.

&&

.AVIATION...
Moderate to breezy trade winds will remain in place for the next
few days as a surface ridge remains to the north of the islands.
Clouds and showers will continue favoring windward and mountain
areas with occasional showers reaching leeward areas. Bands of
increased shower activity with embedded MVFR conditions will be
possible tonight into tomorrow as areas of increased moisture move
through.

AIRMET Tango is in effect for moderate low level turbulence
downwind of the terrain for all islands. AIRMET Sierra for
mountain obscuration over windward areas will be possible later
this evening into tomorrow morning.

&&

.MARINE...
High pressure north of the state will slowly drift east and
strengthen over the next few days, resulting in fresh to strong
trade winds over the islands. A Small Craft Advisory remains in
effect for higher winds through Wednesday covering most Hawaiian
coastal waters from Oahu to Big Island.

Surf heights along all shores will remain below advisory thresholds
through the weekend. A small, medium period northwest swell
will arrive on Wednesday and continue through Saturday. Choppy,
rough surf expected all week along east facing shores due to the
trade winds. South facing shores will continue to see small
background swell pulses through rest of the the week.
