Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
232 PM PDT Fri Apr 26 2024

.SYNOPSIS...A low pressure system will be moving out of the state
tonight into Saturday allowing diminishing showers across eastern
Nevada through tonight. Some fog is expected tonight in valleys
with recent abundant precipitation across the area. Several weak
upper- level disturbances could bring a few more showers to mainly
northern Nevada Sunday, Monday and Wednesday but dry conditions
overall and warming temperatures are expected next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Saturday night

Scattered showers, thunderstorms and snow above 7000 feet or so
will continue to diminish this evening and overnight as the low
pressure system translates east of the region. Lows tonight will
drop well into the 30s. Areas that clear out more will see
temperatures below freezing for a few hours but most locations are
expected to stay above freezing. With recent widespread wetting
rains and near saturated soils, potential for fog is there in
valleys across the area. Cloud cover lingering across eastern
Nevada tonight may mitigate fog formation there but a few valleys
across west central Nevada have a better chance to see marked
clearing and lighter northwest winds.

Besides a few lingering light showers along the UT/NV border
Saturday, much quieter weather will be in place across the area
with lighter, but still noticeable northwest winds. Highs will
rise into the 50s and lower 60s with lows Saturday night falling
into the 30s.

.LONG TERM...Saturday night through next Thursday. Look for a
mainly northwest flow through the early portions of the long term
period. Light, leftover rain showers will continue Sunday
afternoon though accumulations will be light, mainly in northern
Elko county. Afternoon gusts to 20 mph will be likely with highs
in the 50s and 60s. Clouds are expected to scatter out during the
overnight with quiet and dry weather. Overnight lows will be in
the 30s.

The upper flow will become more west to east during the early
morning hours Monday with light, off and on rain showers for
northern Elko county. Accumulations are still looking to be on the
light side with amounts of a trace to 0.05 inches. Winds will be
breezy to locally windy with gusts to 35 mph. Some higher gusts
are possible on the lee-side of mountain ranges with speeds to 45
mph. Highs will warm several degrees with readings in the 60s
with 70s in central Nevada. Look for the showers to end by the
overnight with lows in the 20s and 30s.

From Tuesday through Thursday, another wave is expected to pass
just north of the area on Tuesday with an afternoon of breezy
winds and partly sunny skies, though low-end isolated showers are
possible during the late morning and afternoon hours. Look for
quieter weather for Wednesday though afternoon breezes to 25 mph
are possible. Highs will be in the 60s and 70s for both
afternoons with lows in the 30s and 40s. Look for increasing
clouds and an increasing chance for showers on Thursday with highs
in the 70s and overnight lows in the 30s and 40s.

&&

.AVIATION...Intermittent MVFR/IFR conditions will continue with
VCTS and -SHRA across all terminals except KTPH through the
early evening hours. Breezy winds from the W-NW20-25G30KT
expected to affect all TAF sites into the evening with gusts as
high as 35-40 knots at KTPH during the evening. Winds will subside
later this evening. BCFG is possible across the northern TAF sites
KWMC-KEKO, though chances of occurrence on station is 15%. Look
for mainly VFR conditions on Saturday with afternoon W-NW breezes
to 20KT with gusts to 30KT.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Elevated flows continue across many streams, creeks,
and rivers throughout northern and central Nevada due to snow
melt and recent rainfall. Shower activity across northern Nevada
will diminish and move eastward through tonight as the storm
system exits the region. Cooler temperatures are also expected
the next few days, including freezing temperatures at night at
higher elevations, which will likely slow high elevation snow
melt. There will be opportunities for light rain and higher
elevation snow showers across northern Nevada through the first
half of next week but hydrologic impact should be minimal with
wetting rains not expected.

The Bruneau River is currently in minor flood stage but could
fall to below flood stage late this afternoon or evening. The
river will remain elevated through the weekend however.

The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain is currently in action stage
and is expected to gradually rise in the coming days. The river
is forecast to approach minor flood stage by early next week

The Owyhee River near Wildhorse is currently in action stage and
expected to gradually rise in the coming days. The river is
forecast to reach minor flood stage by early next week.

The Owyhee River near Mountain City is currently in minor flood
stage. The river is forecast to remain in minor flood stage over
the next several days.

Wildhorse Dam is expected to slowly rise during the next several
days but stay in action stage.

The Humboldt River at Comus is currently in action stage and is
forecast to slowly rise through early next week, potentially
reaching minor flood stage by midweek.
