............JULY 2016 WARMER AND DRIER THAN NORMAL............

UPPER LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE DOMINATED THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION FOR
THE MAJORITY OF THE MONTH RESULTING IN A DRIER AND WARMER THAN
NORMAL JULY. THE MONTH STARTED OFF SOMEWHAT COOL AND WET WITH BELOW
NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND PRECIPITATION THE FIRST AND SECOND. UPPER
LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE BUILT OVER THE REGION ON THE 3RD BRINGING ABOVE
NORMAL TEMPERATURES TO NORTHEASTERN COLORADO FROM THE 3RD THROUGH
THE 10TH.

ON THE 10TH...THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 102 DEGREES F WHICH IS THE
HOTTEST TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH AND THE YEAR TO DATE. THE LAST
TIME DENVER REACHED 100 DEGREES F OR HIGHER WAS ON JULY 7TH
2014...WITH THE LAST 102 DEGREE DAY ON JULY 21ST 2012.  THIS WAS
ALSO A MOSTLY DRY PERIOD...WITH ONLY TRACES REPORTED ON THE
3RD...5TH AND 8TH. ON THE 11TH...AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH MOVED ACROSS
THE NORTHERN ROCKIES. THIS TROUGH PUSHED A DRY COLD FRONT ACROSS
NORTHEASTERN COLORADO...WHICH LOWERED TEMPERATURES TO NEAR NORMAL
VALUES. THE UPPER HIGH RE-ESTABLISHED OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN STATES
ON THE 16TH...RESULTING IN ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE
AREA. DENVER EXPERIENCED A PROLONGED PERIOD OF 90 DEGREE WEATHER
EXTENDING FROM JULY 16TH THROUGH JULY 27TH. THE PERIOD LASTED 12
DAYS AND WAS THE 18TH OCCURRENCE OF A STREAK LASTING 12 DAYS OR
LONGER SINCE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1872. THE STREAK CAME TO AN END ON THE
28TH AS COOL MORNING OUTFLOW FROM OVERNIGHT THUNDERSTORMS IN
NEBRASKA AND SOUTH DAKOTA KEPT DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURES BELOW THE 90
DEGREE MARK. THIS UPPER LEVEL TROUGH ALSO BROUGHT TWO AFTERNOONS OF
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY...THE ONLY SIGNIFICANT PRECIPITATION OF THE
MONTH AFTER JULY 2ND. THE LAST 11 DAYS OF JULY FEATURED ONLY 0.01 OF
RAIN WHICH FELL ON THE 31ST.

TEMPERATURES:

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE AT DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT FOR THE
MONTH WAS 76.2 DEGREES F, WHICH WAS 2.0 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE
WARMEST JULY ON RECORD OCCURRED BACK IN 2012...WITH AN AVERAGE
MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 78.9 DEGREES F. THE COLDEST JULY ON RECORD
WAS 67.3 DEGREES F BACK IN 1895. ON THE 10TH...THE TEMPERATURE
CLIMBED TO A RECORD 102 DEGREES F WHICH IS THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE
OF THE MONTH FOR 2016. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE OF 51 DEGREES F
OCCURRED LESS THAN 48 HOURS LATER ON THE MORNING OF THE 12TH.
