SUMMER BEGAN WITH A PERIOD OF COOL, DAMP WEATHER. THE LOW
TEMPERATURE OF 46 ON JUNE 6 WAS THE COOLEST OF THE SEASON. WARMER
WEATHER SOON ARRIVED, AS JUST 5 DAYS LATER THE TEMPERATURE SOARED TO
92 DEGREES, THE WARMEST OF THE SUMMER. THIS WAS JUST THE FIRST OF 3
STRAIGHT DAYS ABOVE 90 DEGREES FROM JUNE 11 THROUGH JUNE 13. THIS
WOULD END UP BEING THE ONLY TIME THIS SUMMER THAT 90 DEGREES WAS
RECORDED AT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE IN GRAY. THE NEXT
SEVERAL WEEKS CONSISTED OF ALTERNATING PERIODS OF WARMER AND COOLER
WEATHER. THE MOST PERSISTENT WARMTH OF THE SEASON CAME IN MID AUGUST
WHEN THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 80 DEGREES ON 13 OUT OF 15 DAYS. ONE
NOTABLE EXCEPTION WAS ON AUGUST 18 WHEN A FRONTAL SYSTEM BROUGHT
MORE THAN AN INCH AND A HALF OF RAIN AND THE TEMPERATURE STAYED IN
THE 60S. THIS WAS THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL IN WHAT WAS OTHERWISE A DRY
SUMMER. BY THE END OF AUGUST A SHIFT TOWARD MORE FALL-LIKE WEATHER
BEGAN, WITH COOL AND DRY WEATHER FOR THE LAST WEEK OF THE MONTH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE SUMMER WAS 68.1 DEGREES WHICH WAS
0.7 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE WARMEST SUMMER WAS JUST LAST YEAR WHEN
THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 69.2 DEGREES. THE COOLEST WAS IN 2009
WHEN IT WAS ONLY 65.5 DEGREES.

A TOTAL OF 7.39 INCHES OF RAIN FELL WHICH WAS 4.80 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL AND THE DRIEST SUMMER SINCE 2003. THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL WAS
ON AUGUST 18 WHEN 1.71 INCHES WAS MEASURED. THE DRIEST SUMMER WAS IN
1999 WHEN ONLY 6.92 INCHES OF RAIN WAS RECORDED. THE WETTEST WAS IN
2009 WHEN 21.77 INCHES FELL.
