...Beale Air Force Base Weather Radar Outage For Heavy Maintenance
Jul 11, 2017 to Jul 14, 2017...

The Beale Air Force Base weather radar located near Oroville, CA
(KBBX) will be down for approximately three days beginning Tuesday,
Jul 11 at approximately 8 a.m. PDT. The radar is owned and operated
by the US Air Force and is part of a nationwide Doppler radar

The maintenance work must be performed to keep the radar operating far
into the future. The radar is maintained on a regular basis by Air Force
technicians. This heavy maintenance work is part of a nationwide project
to extend the service life of all 159 Doppler weather radars (WSR-88Ds)
which were designed in the 1980s and installed in the 1990s. Specifically,
a new signal processor will be installed which replaces obsolete
technology and provides improvements to functionality, IT security, and
data quality and speed.

Because of the large scope of the work, once the maintenance begins, the
radar will not be able to be restarted until the project has been
completed. The work should be completed by 4 p.m. PDT, Friday Jul 14,
but it is possible that the work may finish a little earlier.

The schedule for this maintenance was chosen based on when the impact
of having the radar down would be least disruptive. During the outage,
neighboring Doppler radars at Davis, CA (KDAX), Eureka (KBHX), Hanford
(KHNX), Monterey (KMUX), and Reno (KRGX) will continue to provide coverage
over parts of the area served by the Beale Air Force Base radar.
