National Weather Service to provide new river forecast services
for the Illinois River at Chewey, Oklahoma

The National Weather Service Office in Tulsa and the Arkansas-Red
Basin River Forecast Center in Tulsa, in cooperation with the U.S.
Geological Survey (USGS) in Oklahoma, will now provide river
stage forecasts for the streamgaging station on the Illinois River
at Chewey, OK, effective September 7, 2016.

The USGS operates and maintains telemetered streamgaging equipment
on the Chewey Rd. Hamilton Bridge in Chewey, OK. This site is
operated and maintained by the USGS, and funded in part by the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the GRDA Scenic Rivers
Operations. The addition of forecasts for this river gage site
will help the NWS to provide enhanced warning services for
residents living along the Illinois River in parts of Cherokee,
Adair, and Delaware Counties.

The Illinois River flood stage at this site has been set at 12
feet. The Illinois River Basin is subject to occasional flooding,
with record flooding occurring along the Illinois River in late
December 2015. Five crests above flood stage occurred at the
Chewey gage site in 2015, including a new record crest in
December. Other river forecast services in the Illinois River
drainage area supported by the Tulsa Weather Forecast Office and
the River Forecast Center include upstream river stage forecast
points near Watts and Kansas, OK, and downstream forecast points
near Tahlequah and Eldon, OK.
