... THIS IS FLOOD AWARENESS WEEK IN ALASKA ...

THIS WEEK MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE FLOOD SEASON FOR ALASKA.

EACH DAY OF FLOOD AWARENESS WEEK WILL FEATURE A UNIQUE TOPIC RELEVANT
TO EDUCATION AND PREPAREDNESS.

TODAY WE HIGHLIGHT SNOWMELT FLOODING

DURING THE SPRING, FROZEN GROUND REDUCES THE AMOUNT OF WATER FROM
MELTING SNOW OR RAINFALL FROM SEEPING INTO THE GROUND. A RAPID
WARMING CAN CAUSE EXCESSIVE MELT WATER FROM THE SNOWPACK THAT CAN
OVERFLOW STREAMS, RIVERS AND LAKES. IN 2009, ALASKA EXPERIENCED
RECORD-BREAKING FLOODING AFTER WARMER-THAN-NORMAL TEMPERATURES CAUSED
RAPID SNOWMELT THAT TRIGGERED ICE BREAKUP AND RESULTING ICE JAMS
ALONG ALASKAN RIVERS. FLOODS DUE EXCLUSIVELY TO MELTING SNOW ARE MORE
COMMON IN NORTHERN ALASKA EVEN THOUGH THOSE SNOW DEPTHS ARE MUCH LESS
THAN THOSE EXPERIENCED IN SOUTHERN ALASKA LOCATIONS. THIS IS DUE IN
PART TO THE MORE RAPID WARMING NORMALLY EXPERIENCED IN NORTHERN
ALASKA. BUT SNOWMELT FLOODING CAN OCCUR IN JUST ABOUT ANY PART OF
THE STATE.

RESIDENTS IN AREAS THAT ARE LOW LYING, EXPERIENCING HEAVY SNOWPACK,
OR NEAR RIVERS, LAKES AND STREAMS SHOULD PREPARE FOR SNOWMELT
FLOODING BY MOVING VALUABLES TO HIGHER GROUND.

TOMORROW WE WILL HIGHLIGHT FLOOD THREATS DUE TO GLACIER DAMMED LAKE
RELEASES.
