...GALE WARNING FOR THE NEARSHORE WATERS OF SOUTHWEST LAKE
SUPERIOR TODAY THROUGH LATE TONIGHT... ...SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY
FOR THE FAR NORTH SHORE AND FOR AREAS OF THE SOUTH SHORE EAST OF
BAYFIELD PENINSULA FOR TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING...

.A STRONG SPRING STORM SYSTEM WILL AFFECT THE WESTERN GREAT LAKES
REGION TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY MORNING. A STRENGTHENING AREA OF LOW
PRESSURE WILL MOVE FROM NEAR MASON CITY IOWA THIS EVENING TO THE
EASTERN UPPER PENINSULA OF MICHIGAN BY THURSDAY AFTERNOON. STRONG
EAST TO NORTHEAST WINDS WILL CONTINUE OVER WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR
OVERNIGHT IN RESPONSE TO THE APPROACHING STORM SYSTEM. THE
STRONGEST WINDS WILL BE NEAR THE HEAD OF THE LAKE AND ALONG THE
WESTERN SIDE OF BAYFIELD PENINSULA TO THE APOSTLE ISLANDS. THE
WINDS SHOULD GRADUALLY SUBSIDE LATE THIS EVENING INTO THURSDAY
MORNING.

...GALE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 AM CDT THURSDAY...

* WINDS...NORTHEAST 20 TO 30 KNOTS WITH GALE FORCE GUSTS TO 40
  KNOTS.

* WAVES...5 TO 8 FEET IN ICE FREE AREAS. LESS THAN 2 FT IN ICE
  COVERED AREAS...WHICH IS MOST OF THE WATERS RIGHT NOW.
  HOWEVER...THE WINDS COULD BEGIN TO BREAK UP THE ICE AND GENERATE
  HIGHER WAVES.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A GALE WARNING MEANS WINDS OF 34 TO 47 KNOTS ARE IMMINENT OR
OCCURRING. OPERATING A VESSEL IN GALE CONDITIONS REQUIRES
EXPERIENCE AND PROPERLY EQUIPPED VESSELS. IT IS HIGHLY
RECOMMENDED THAT MARINERS WITHOUT THE PROPER EXPERIENCE SEEK SAFE
HARBOR PRIOR TO THE ONSET OF GALE CONDITIONS.

WINDS AND WAVES WILL ALSO INTERACT WITH LARGE AMOUNTS OF WINTER
LAKE ICE TO PILE UP ICE ON ANY SHORELINES...HARBORS AND HARBOR
APPROACHES THAT ARE EXPOSED TO THE NORTHEAST. IN ADDITION...LAKE
ICE EMBEDDED WITHIN THE WAVES COULD RESULT IN VERY DANGEROUS
CONDITIONS FOR ANY VESSELS ON WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR.
