High Surf Advisory

COASTAL HAZARD MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LOS ANGELES/OXNARD CA
1004 PM PDT MON MAY 4 2015

...LARGE SURF EXPECTED ACROSS SOUTH FACING BEACHES OF LOS ANGELES
COUNTY THROUGH TUESDAY...

.A LONG PERIOD SOUTH SWELL WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE ACROSS THE
COASTAL WATERS WITH A PERIOD AROUND 20 SECONDS. THE SWELL WILL
GRADUALLY SUBSIDE ON TUESDAY.

THIS LONG PERIOD SWELL WILL TRANSLATE TO SURF OF 5 TO 8 FEET WITH
LOCAL SETS TO 10 FEET AT FAVORED SOUTH FACING BEACHES INCLUDING
MALIBU AND ZUMA BEACHES AS WELL AS THE SOUTH EXPOSED AREAS OF
PALOS VERDES.

IN ADDITION TO THE LARGE SURF...BEACHGOERS CAN EXPECT POWERFUL
RIP CURRENTS AND LONG-SHORE CURRENTS AS WELL AS SOME BEACH EROSION
DURING HIGH TIDES. THE HIGH SURF AND STRONG CURRENTS WILL CREATE
VERY DANGEROUS SWIMMING CONDITIONS.

...HIGH SURF ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM PDT TUESDAY...

* SURF...5 TO 8 FOOT SURF WITH LOCAL 10 FOOT SETS ACROSS FAVORED
  SOUTH FACING BEACHES INCLUDING MALIBU...ZUMA...AND PALOS
  VERDES. SOUTH FACING COASTAL AREAS OF SANTA CATALINA ISLAND WILL
  ALSO BE AFFECTED. LOCAL SURF OF 4 TO 6 FEET WILL BE POSSIBLE
  BETWEEN MANHATTAN BEACH AND SANTA MONICA BEACH.

* TIMING...SURF...PEAKING EARLIER TODAY...WILL SLOWLY SUBSIDE
  TROUGH TUESDAY EVENING.

* TIDES...HIGH TIDES NEAR 5.6 FEET WILL OCCUR 10 PM THIS EVENING.
  TIDAL OVERFLOWS ARE NOT ANTICIPATED WITH THIS EVENT.

* IMPACTS...THE LARGE SURF AND POWERFUL RIP CURRENTS WILL
  PRODUCE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SWIMMING CONDITIONS. PEOPLE
  STANDING TOO CLOSE TO THE WAVES CAN BE SWEPT OFF THEIR FEET
  AND INJURED. LARGE WAVES CAN SWEEP PEOPLE OFF OF JETTIES AND
  WAVES MAY WASH OVER SEA WALLS. BEACH EROSION IS EXPECTED AT
  TIMES OF HIGH TIDE. LONGSHORE CURRENTS COMMONLY OCCUR WHEN
  WAVES APPROACH THE SHORELINE AT AN ANGLE. THEY CAN BE
  PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS NEAR A JETTY OR PIER.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A HIGH SURF ADVISORY MEANS THAT HIGH SURF WILL AFFECT BEACHES IN
THE ADVISORY AREA...PRODUCING RIP CURRENTS AND LOCALIZED BEACH
EROSION.

REMEMBER...IF CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT...SWIM PARALLEL TO SHORE
UNTIL YOU ARE FREE OF THE POWERFUL CURRENT. ALWAYS SWIM NEAR A
LIFEGUARD.

STRONG AND DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS. HIGH SURF CONDITIONS ARE
EXPECTED ACROSS LOS ANGELES COUNTY...WITH ELEVATED SURF ACROSS OTHER
SOUTH FACING BEACHES. VERY STRONG AND DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS...BEACH
EROSION...AND LARGE WAVES SUDDENLY SWEEPING PEOPLE OFF JETTIES WILL
CONTINUE TO BE THE MAJOR MARINE HAZARDS. THE LONG PERIOD SOUTH
SWELLS WILL LIKELY HAVE EXTRA SURGING THAT MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO

FACING BEACHES. VERY STRONG AND DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS...BEACH
EROSION...AND LARGE WAVES SUDDENLY SWEEPING PEOPLE OFF JETTIES WILL
CONTINUE TO BE THE MAJOR MARINE HAZARDS. THE LONG PERIOD SOUTH
SWELLS WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE EXTRA SURGING MONDAY THAT MAY BE
HAZARDOUS TO ANCHORED BOATS...INCLUDING AVALON HARBOR AND PORT SAN
LUIS.

THERE WILL BE A THREAT OF SHOWERS WITH RESORT LEVEL SNOW SHOWERS
SOMETIME IN THE THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY TIME FRAME ASSOCIATED WITH A
COLD UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM.
