...AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT CDT TONIGHT...

THE ILLINOIS ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY HAS DETERMINED THAT AN
AIR POLLUTION ACTION DAY WILL BE DECLARED FOR THE GREATER CHICAGO
METROPOLITAN AREA AND IS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT CDT TONIGHT.

AN AIR POLLUTION ACTION DAY IS DECLARED WHEN WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE
SUCH THAT WIDESPREAD OZONE AND OR PARTICULATE LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO
BE AT OR ABOVE THE UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS CATEGORY OF THE
AIR QUALITY INDEX.

ACTIVE CHILDREN AND ADULTS ESPECIALLY PEOPLE WITH PULMONARY OR
RESPIRATORY DISEASE SUCH AS ASTHMA SHOULD LIMIT PROLONGED OUTDOOR
ACTIVITY.

PARTICIPANTS IN THE...PARTNERS FOR CLEAN AIR PROGRAM...ARE REQUESTED
TO INITIATE THEIR ACTIVITIES. RESIDENTS ARE ALSO URGED TO REDUCE
POLLUTION LEVELS. AQI FORECAST AND TIPS ON HOW YOU CAN REDUCED YOUR

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT.

WEATHER HAZARDS EXPECTED:
  ELEVATED THUNDERSTORM RISK...WITH AN ASSOCIATED:
      LIMITED TORNADO RISK.
      LIMITED HAIL RISK...UP TO PENNY SIZE.
      ELEVATED THUNDERSTORM WIND DAMAGE RISK...UP TO 60 MPH.
  SIGNIFICANT EXCESSIVE HEAT RISK.

DISCUSSION:

ISOLATED TO SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE THIS MORNING
MAINLY SOUTH OF A ROCKFORD TO FOWLER INDIANA LINE. SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS ARE THEN POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON MAINLY NORTH OF
INTERSTATE 80. ALL STORMS HAVE HEAVY RAIN POTENTIAL...BUT ONLY
EXPECTING A FEW STORMS TO PRODUCE DAMAGING WINDS. ADDITIONAL
STORMS PUSH SOUTH OUT OF WISCONSIN OVERNIGHT AND SOME MAY PRODUCE
STRONG WINDS.

DANGEROUS HEAT IS EXPECTED SOUTH OF A ROCKFORD TO FOWLER INDIANA
LINE TODAY.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY.

  LIMITED SEVERE THUNDERSTORM RISK.

EVENING...

* TEMPERATURES...HIGHS IN THE LOW 90S TODAY.

* MAXIMUM HEAT INDEX VALUES...102 TO 106 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON.

* IMPACTS...TEMPERATURES THIS HIGH COULD LEAD TO HEAT RELATED
  ILLNESSES WITH PROLONGED EXPOSURE. THE ELDERLY...SMALL
  CHILDREN AND PETS ARE ESPECIALLY SUSCEPTIBLE. PLAN AHEAD. HAVE
  A COOL PLACE TO SHELTER FROM THE HEAT. AVOID OUTDOOR ACTIVITY
  DURING THE AFTERNOON.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS
EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY
WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE
POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS...STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED
ROOM...STAY OUT OF THE SUN...AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND
NEIGHBORS.

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS...IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN
POSSIBLE...RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR
EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT
STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN POSSIBLE
AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK...THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND
HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS
IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY HEAT
SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE IS AN
