URGENT - WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ST LOUIS MO
310 AM CDT WED AUG 20 2014

...DANGEROUS HEAT AND HUMIDITY EXPECTED ACROSS MUCH OF CENTRAL AND
EASTERN MISSOURI AS WELL AS SOUTHWEST ILLINOIS...

.HEAT AND HUMIDITY WILL BUILD ACROSS THE AREA THE REMAINDER OF
THE WEEK AND INTO THE UPCOMING WEEKEND. THIS SUMMER HAS BEEN
RELATIVELY COOL...SO THESE HIGH LEVELS OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY WILL
FEEL OPPRESSIVE. THE LENGTH OF THIS HEAT WAVE WILL MAKE IT
ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS FOR THOSE THAT DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO AIR
CONDITIONING. ALTHOUGH THE ENTIRE AREA WILL EXPERIENCE THESE HOT
AND HUMID CONDITIONS...THE GREATEST IMPACT WILL BE FELT IN THE
URBAN HEAT ISLAND OF THE ST LOUIS METRO AREA.

SUNDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ST LOUIS HAS ISSUED A HEAT
ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 7 PM
CDT SUNDAY.

* TIMING...DANGEROUS LEVELS OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY WILL BEGIN ON
  WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON...AND WILL CONTINUE FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK
  AND INTO THE UPCOMING WEEKEND.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES...UP TO 105 DUE TO TEMPERATURES IN THE MID
  90S...AND DEWPOINTS AROUND 70.

* IMPACTS...THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY
  WILL LIKELY LEAD TO AN INCREASED RISK OF HEAT- RELATED STRESS
  AND ILLNESS. THE VERY YOUNG... THE ELDERLY... THOSE WITHOUT AIR
  CONDITIONING...AND THOSE PARTICIPATING IN STRENUOUS OUTDOOR
  ACTIVITIES WILL BE THE MOST SUSCEPTIBLE. ALSO...CAR INTERIORS
  CAN REACH LETHAL TEMPERATURES IN A MATTER OF MINUTES. BEAT THE
  HEAT...CHECK THE BACKSEAT! NEVER LEAVE CHILDREN OR PETS
  UNATTENDED IN A VEHICLE...NOT EVEN FOR A MINUTE.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN
POSSIBLE...RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO THE EARLY MORNING
OR EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND
HEAT STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN
POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK...THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND
HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS
IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY
HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE
IS AN EMERGENCY. CALL 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY.

THERE IS A CHANCE FOR THUNDERSTORMS.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY

THERE IS A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR THUNDERSTORMS WEDNESDAY AND
WEDNESDAY NIGHT AS A WARM FRONT LIFTS NORTH ACROSS THE REGION.

A DANGEROUS COMBINATION OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY WILL BUILD ACROSS
THE ST. LOUIS METROPOLITAN AREA WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY. AN
EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR HEAT INDEX VALUES
REACHING OR EXCEEDING 105 DEGREES EACH AFTERNOON.

LOCATIONS OUTSIDE OF THE URBAN HEAT ISLAND OF ST. LOUIS MAY ALSO
SEE AFTERNOON HEAT INDEX VALUES AROUND 105 DEGREES BEGINNING ON
FRIDAY AND LASTING INTO THE WEEKEND.

THERE IS ANOTHER CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS ON SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY.
