OTERO NM-
140 PM MDT THU JUL 31 2014

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN EL PASO HAS ISSUED A

* FLOOD ADVISORY FOR...
  CENTRAL OTERO COUNTY IN SOUTH CENTRAL NEW MEXICO...

* UNTIL 330 PM MDT

* AT 135 PM MDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED
  THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAINFALL ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA. DOPPLER
  RADAR ESTIMATED FROM .5 TO 1.0 INCHES OF RAIN HAD FALLEN WITHIN AN
  HOUR EAST OF CLOUDCROFT AND SOUTH OF SILVER LAKE AND ALSO ON HIGHWAY
  82 BETWEEN CLOUDCROFT AND MAYHILL. ANOTHER AREA WAS EAST OF HIGHWAY
  244 NORTH OF ELK SILVER IN THE TURKEY CREEK CANYON.

* LOCATIONS IMPACTED INCLUDE...
  TIMBERON...
  MESCALERO...
  CLOUDCROFT...
  ELK SILVER...
  SIXTEEN SPRINGS...
  SILVER LAKE...
  APACHE SUMMIT...
  MOUNTAIN PARK...
  SUNSPOT...
  WEED...
  BLUFF SPRINGS...
  LAKE MESCALERO...

RUNOFF FROM THIS EXCESSIVE RAINFALL WILL CAUSE MINOR FLOODING TO
OCCUR...ESPECIALLY ALONG SMALL STREAMS AND NEAR LOW WATER CROSSINGS.

ADDITIONAL MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINFALL IS LIKELY IN THESE AREAS OVER THE NEXT
HOUR OR TWO DUE TO THE SLOW MOVEMENT OF THESE STORMS UNDER 5 MPH.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

EXCESSIVE RAINFALL CAN QUICKLY TURN DRY DESERT WASHES AND ARROYOS
INTO RAGING RIVERS...EVEN IN AREAS FAR FROM WHERE RAIN HAS FALLEN. DO
NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS FLOODED ARROYOS. SWIFTLY MOVING WATER CAN CARVE
DEEP CHANNELS IN PREVIOUSLY SHALLOW WASHES...AND WATER CAN BE MUCH
DEEPER THAN IT APPEARS. IF YOUR ROUTE BECOMES CUT OFF BY FLOODED
ARROYOS...WAIT FOR FLOOD WATERS TO RECEDE.

IN HILLY TERRAIN THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF LOW WATER CROSSINGS WHICH ARE
POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS IN HEAVY RAIN. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL ACROSS
FLOODED ROADS. IT ONLY TAKES A FEW INCHES OF SWIFTLY FLOWING WATER TO
CARRY VEHICLES AWAY.
