AVALANCHE WARNING
COLORADO AVALANCHE INFORMATION CENTER
RELAYED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DENVER/BOULDER CO
559 PM MST SUN DEC 21 2014

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE
COLORADO AVALANCHE INFORMATION CENTER.

...AVALANCHE WARNING ISSUED FOR THE STEAMBOAT AND FLAT TOPS AREA OF
NORTHERN COLORADO...

STRONG WINDS, SIGNIFICANT SNOW, AND A VERY WEAK OLD SNOWPACK HAVE
CONSPIRED TO BUILD DANGEROUS AVALANCHE CONDITIONS ACROSS NORTHERN
COLORADO FOR SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY.

AS OF SUNSET SUNDAY NIGHT 12 TO 20 INCHES OF NEW SNOW WAS REPORTED
FROM THE AREA. WESTERLY WINDS HAD INCREASED TO A STEADY 20 PLUS
MILES PER HOUR. THE OLD SNOWPACK HAD A PERSISTENTLY WEAK SNOW LAYER
WHICH WILL STRUGGLE TO ACCEPT THE NEW SNOW LOAD. TEMPERATURES HAVE
ALSO SHOWN A STEADY RISE DURING THE STORM CYCLE, WHICH IS ANOTHER
TELLTALE SIGN OF INCREASING AVALANCHE DANGER.

AT THIS TIME BACKCOUNTRY TRAVEL ACROSS THE ZONE IS NOT RECOMMENDED.
