DAWSON NE-
854 PM CDT SUN MAY 24 2015

...A FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1015 AM CDT WEDNESDAY FOR
SOUTHWESTERN DAWSON COUNTY...

MINOR FLOODING WILL CONTINUE ALONG THE PLATTE RIVER THROUGH A LARGE
SECTION OF DAWSON COUNTY INTO NEXT WEEK. A FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN
EFFECT UNTIL WEDNESDAY FOR AREAS ADJACENT TO THE RIVER WHICH MAY BE
IMPACTED BY THE HIGH WATER.

UPSTREAM AT BRADY...THE RIVER STAGE EARLY SUNDAY AFTERNOON WAS 8.2
FEET. FLOOD STAGE AT BRADY IS 7.5 FEET. THE RIVER IS FORECAST TO
FALL THROUGH ABOUT THURSDAY BUT STILL REMAIN ABOVE FLOOD STAGE. THE
RIVER IS EXPECTED TO RISE AGAIN BY NEXT WEEKEND WITH A 2ND CREST AT
THAT TIME. THAT CREST IS EXPECTED TO BE JUST BELOW THE MOST RECENT
CREST.

AT COZAD...THE GAUGE READING SUNDAY AFTERNOON WAS 6.3 FEET...OR JUST
BELOW FLOOD STAGE. THE RIVER IS FORECAST TO REMAIN JUST BELOW FLOOD
STAGE THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH...BUT STILL REMAIN ABOVE 6 FEET.
THEREFORE...ANY RETREAT OF WATER IN FLOODED AREAS WILL BE A VERY
SLOW PROCESS. THOSE ALONG THE RIVER SHOULD ANTICIPATE A SLIGHT RISE
IN WATER LEVELS AS NEXT WEEKEND APPROACHES.

WHILE RIVER LEVELS ARE DROPPING SOME...FLOODING ALONG LOW LYING
AREAS NEAR THE RIVER WILL LIKELY CONTINUE THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF NEXT
WEEK. THOSE WITH PROPERTY INTERESTS ALONG THE RIVER SHOULD TAKE
MEASURES TO PROTECT THEIR INVESTMENT.

THESE FORECASTS ARE BASED LARGELY ON WATER ALREADY IN THE PLATTE
RIVER BASIN. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL IN THE BASIN WILL RESULT IN CHANGES
TO ANTICIPATED STAGES AND TIMING OF CRESTS OR FALLS. ALWAYS CHECK
RIVER STAGES AND FORECASTS DAILY AT A MINIMUM TO REMAIN INFORMED OF
THE SITUATION.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

MOST FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES. NEVER DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO
AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. FLOOD WATERS ARE USUALLY
DEEPER THAN THEY APPEAR. JUST ONE FOOT OF FLOWING WATER IS POWERFUL
ENOUGH TO SWEEP VEHICLES OFF THE ROAD. WHEN ENCOUNTERING FLOODED
ROADS MAKE THE SMART CHOICE...TURN AROUND...DONT DROWN.
