...BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MELBOURNE HAS ISSUED A BEACH
HAZARDS STATEMENT FOR LIFE THREATENING ROUGH SURF AND RIP
CURRENTS...WHICH IS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING.

* HAZARDS...ROUGH SURF...RIP CURRENTS AND LONGSHORE CURRENTS.

* TIMING...ROUGH SURF WILL OCCUR ALL DAY. THE GREATEST THREAT FROM
RIP CURRENTS SHOULD BE THIS MORNING AND EVENING DUE TO TIDAL
  EFFECTS.

* POTENTIAL IMPACTS...THE ROUGH SURF APPARENTLY CAUSED ONE
FATALITY IN VOLUSIA COUNTY LATE SUNDAY MORNING. SIMILARLY
DANGEROUS CONDITIONS WILL OCCUR AGAIN TODAY.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
THE BEST SAFETY ADVICE IS TO ONLY ENTER THE SURF NEAR A LIFEGUARD.

ROUGH SURF CAN OFTEN BE MUCH MORE DANGEROUS THAN IT APPEARS WHILE
STANDING ON THE BEACH. HEAVY BREAKING WAVES CAN KNOCK YOU OFF A
SANDBAR INTO DEEPER WATER...OR INTO LONGSHORE CURRENTS AND RIP
CURRENTS.

IF YOU BECOME CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT...YELL FOR HELP. REMAIN
CALM...DO NOT EXHAUST YOURSELF...AND STAY AFLOAT WHILE WAITING
FOR HELP. IF YOU MUST SWIM OUT OF THE SEAWARD PULL OF THE RIP
CURRENT...SWIM AT AN ANGLE AWAY FROM THE CURRENT. THEN ONCE OUT
OF THE RIP CURRENT...SWIM DIRECTLY BACK TOWARD THE BEACH. DO NOT
ATTEMPT TO SWIM DIRECTLY AGAINST A RIP CURRENT AS YOU WILL TIRE
QUICKLY.
