...RARE MONTH OF MAY SNOWFALL COULD CAUSE TRAVEL PROBLEMS IN THE
NORTHERN NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS EARLY THIS MORNING...

.MOISTURE WRAPPING SOUTHWARD ALONG THE SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS
BEHIND A DEEP LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS BEING ACCOMPANIED BY JUST
ENOUGH COLD AIR TO PRODUCE ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL ALONG THE HIGHER
ELEVATIONS OF THE NORTHERN NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS. THE SNOWFALL
MAY COMBINE WITH TEMPERATURES NEAR OR JUST BELOW THE FREEZING
MARK AT TIMES TO CREATE SLIPPERY ROAD CONDITIONS IN THE HIGHER
ELEVATIONS THIS MORNING.

ABOVE 3500 FEET...

* LOCATIONS...ELEVATIONS ABOVE 3500 FEET IN AVERY AND MITCHELL
  COUNTIES.

* HAZARDS...ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL.

* TIMING...TEMPERATURES WILL BE COLD ENOUGH FOR PRECIPITATION TO
  FALL AS SNOW ABOVE 5000 FEET...WITH A RAIN AND SNOW MIX LIKELY
  BELOW THAT. THE SNOWFALL WILL CONTINUE TO TAPER OFF OR CHANGE
  BACK OVER TO RAIN THIS MORNING.

* ACCUMULATIONS...ADDITIONAL SNOW ACCUMULATION OF UP TO 1 INCH
  ABOVE 5000 FEET.

* IMPACTS...THE SNOW WILL ACCUMULATE MAINLY ON THE GRASS AT
  LOWER ELEVATIONS...BUT ROADWAY TEMPERATURES WILL BE COLDER AT
  THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS AND SLIPPERY ROADS WILL LIKELY DEVELOP
  THERE.

* TEMPERATURES...IN THE MID 30S.

* WINDS...NORTHWEST 5 TO 15 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 30 MPH.
